Business Development at Shopify has a responsibility to “Make Commerce Better” by creating partnerships with leading platforms and service providers. We focus on acquiring new customers, creating new revenue opportunities, and making Shopify the best product to launch and run a business. Business Development Managers (BDM’s) operate alongside various product groups and teams  in Shopify. This role is based in Tokyo and offers an exciting and unique opportunity to broadly engage across groups at Shopify to accelerate our growth and enhance our product in Japan.

An ideal candidate will be able to develop and lead critical initiatives working alongside engineering, design, finance, and product marketing to create growth for Shopify through creating meaningful partnerships, supporting agencies and freelancers to grow with Shopify, and executing online and offline marketing strategies. We are looking for someone to join our team who thinks differently about problems and is a self starter passionate about making commerce better in Japan.  This person will deliver value to Shopify through an understanding of ecommerce in Japan and draw on their creativity to build relevant and highly effective co-marketing programs and partnerships, and use their tenacity to see ideas through to execution.

You'll need to have:

    • Hustle, and lots of it
    • 5-10+ years experience in business development, partnerships management, or market entry in tech, retail, or ecommerce focused on the Japanese market
    • Experience working across product, marketing, and engineering teams
    • Track record of success in product launches and accelerating growth in Japan
    • An analytical and entrepreneurial mind
    • Fluent in English and Japanese

You'll be working on things like:

    • Developing Shopify’s broader entry strategy for Japan to accelerate growth
    • Act as a key point of contact while creating and managing relationships with relevant partners and contact pre/post launch
    • Work alongside other groups including Product Managers to understand and influence product vision for Japan and be able to communicate it convincingly to internal and external stakeholders
    • Lead discussion across other functional teams within Shopify including Product, Engineering, Marketing, Legal, Growth, and Finance to execute on various opportunities
    • Manage Shopify’s presence at key partner and ecommerce events to drive growth in partners and merchants
    • Constantly identifying, engaging, and developing partners across a variety of verticals to support the needs of our merchants
    • Driving partner activities, executing go-to-market strategies, developing sales and marketing initiatives, and managing partner growth and development
    • Working with our partners to drive best practices for reducing merchant time-to-revenue, and improving the scalability of our partner business
    • Serve as an evangelist both inside Shopify and externally
