As a team we are responsible for...

The Operational Systems team at Simply Business has a mission to help the People and Finance functions of the business “Do the Basics Brilliantly”. We aim to better connecting various systems operating in these function to minimise manual tasks and smooth processes.

We will also revolutionise decision making in the People teams by building a state of the art People Analytics platform. This will provide reporting and insight capabilities, and in the longer term this will grow in sophistication with the ambition to find ways to measure concepts such as culture and engagement.

As a Data Engineer you will:

    • Help design, build, maintain and own our People Analytics platform, including:
    • Liaising with business stakeholders and collecting data & analytics requirements
    • Designing and building People Analytics data structures
    • Designing and building ETL Pipelines
    • Contributing to building the self serve capability for users to explore and report on the data
    • Supporting and managing the tools underpinning our People Analytics platform
    • Supporting and empowering users to get the most out of the platform.

Responsibilities include:

    • Setting the architectural directions for the People Analytics data platform.
    • Being hands on in developing our data structures and pipelines using best practices, appropriate tools and technologies. 
    • Highlighting areas for continuous improvement and driving their prioritisation. 
    • Being proactive in collaborating and communicating with our people team as well as other tech & data stakeholders.. 
    • Championing data thinking whilst creating amazingly useful systems in a collaborative way for our key customers. 

What we are looking for:

    • Experience designing, building and maintaining data warehouses and developing ETL pipelines.
    • Intermediate or advanced SQL skills.
    • Coding experience is highly valued, especially for API integrations. We use Ruby, Scala and Python as well as Redshift/Snowflake but you don’t need experience in these. If you're happy to learn them, we will support you.
    • Strong interpersonal skills to work well in our very open and friendly environment.
    • The ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both tech and non tech colleagues.
    • Understanding and appreciation of agile and lean methodologies.
    • Strong desire to work collaboratively with our people and finance teams. We do not divide "business" and  "tech" teams, we see both as one team as we are all working towards one shared goal.
    • Pro-active in suggesting new tools, processes and technologies… anything which will help us improve!
    • Experience working with People / HR data would be a bonus.
