Slate is hiring an editor to help grow our Slate Plus membership program. Slate Plus is a crucial pillar of Slate’s success, and this editor will develop and execute strategies that help build loyalty among readers and convert them into subscribers. The ideal candidate thinks strategically and creatively, whether they are focused on newsletter strategy, interpreting data about member-exclusive advice columns, or plotting how to keep people coming back to our Supreme Court coverage. They understand what makes Slate’s work distinctive and why people pay to support our journalism. They are also a team player—the Slate Plus editor works collaboratively with teams across the newsroom and throughout the company to help reach membership goals.
Slate welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The position can be located in New York or D.C. Strong remote candidates will be considered. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America East. The minimum salary for this position is $76,000 but compensation can and will reflect applicants' experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop strategies to grow Slate Plus membership by working with editors, interpreting data, and experimenting in a rigorous way
- Work closely with the subscriptions and optimization team to align editorial strategy with business priorities and Slate Plus strategic road map
- Build out and refine Slate’s newsletter strategy, including helping us reimagine and grow our flagship daily newsletter, the Slatest. Newsletters are a proven driver of reader loyalty, and the first big project for the Slate Plus editor will be improving ours.
- Spot opportunities for the next areas of growth for Slate Plus
- Work alongside members of the audience development and podcast teams to determine how best to promote Slate Plus audio benefits.

- At least three years of experience as an editor, audience engagement editor, newsletter editor, or in a similar position at a publication
- An understanding of what makes Slate’s work distinctive and a desire to connect that to paying membership
- A deep interest in how Slate can build loyalty among our readers
- A passion for news and journalism
- Top-notch communication and organization skills
- Experience working with paywalls or membership programs is a plus, but not required
