Copy Chief

Brooklyn, New York /
Editorial – The Site /
Slate is hiring a copy chief to polish our writers’ words and help lead our copy-editing team. We’re looking for a strong copy editor who can skillfully copy-edit and proofread articles while offering thoughtful and sensitive reads of our most important stories. You’ll play a key role in guiding our articles through the production process to publication. Solid news judgment and the ability to multitask are essential to succeed in this position. The bulk of the copy chief’s time will be spent deep in redlines. However, the copy chief will also work with our managing editor to lead a small but mighty team, maintain and update our style guide, manage the corrections process, weigh in on editorial standards issues, and keep the site humming. We believe Slate’s commitment to accuracy sets us apart, and our copy chief will help deliver the promise of clarity, precision, transparency, and consistency to our loyal audience.
Slate welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The position can be located in New York or D.C. Strong remote candidates will be considered. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America East. The minimum salary for this position is $64,000 but compensation can and will reflect applicants' experience.
