Sr Audience Engagement Editor

Brooklyn, New York /
Editorial – The Site /
Slate is hiring a full-time engagement editor to join its audience development team. Ideal candidates will think strategically about how to sustain and delight a loyal audience and also be excited about engaging new readers and listeners. They can translate Slate’s voice to different platforms and hit the right tone, whether we’re amplifying serious news of the day or a bonkers advice column. Candidates will have strong news judgment: During major events, this person will highlight Slate’s distinctive coverage across platforms. They will write compelling headlines in Slate’s voice (and teach others how to write them, too). They’ll also be eager to experiment with new platforms, partnerships, and ideas, and they will spot the ways digital media trends are changing so we can move quickly when it makes sense. Demonstrated expertise in SEO and/or social distribution is a plus.

Slate welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The position can be located in New York or D.C. Strong remote candidates will be considered. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America, East. The salary minimum for this position is $71,000, but compensation will reflect applicants’ experience.
