News Editor

Brooklyn, New York /
Editorial – The Site /
Slate is looking for a News Editor to take charge of editing and scheduling our daily news stories. This editor will process copy quickly and thoughtfully, and must be an expert at framing stories that will travel well around the internet. The ideal candidate is a digital newshound with plenty of creative ideas about how Slate stories can push forward our readers’ understanding of the news. We are in a moment at the magazine where we are looking to redefine what a Slate news story is, and we’re looking for someone to come in with unique and executable ideas for how Slate can make our news coverage distinct and worthy of readers’ time.
This position will also require a team player—while the primary responsibility is news-focused, this editor will have the opportunity to work closely with our politics and jurisprudence teams, and in particular will lend an extra pair of editing hands to those sections as needed. This role offers a chance to work with experienced writers and help them land their stories when working at a fast pace. This editor should therefore be very familiar with our work across the magazine and should feel comfortable preserving the distinctive voices of our talent while giving tight and rigorous edits. Additionally, this editor will work to help redefine and establish our flagship daily newsletter, The Slatest, to reflect Slate’s broader sensibility and to highlight our best work for readers.
Slate welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The position can be located in New York or D.C. Strong remote candidates will be considered. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America, East. Per our contract, the minimum salary for this position is $82,000, but compensation will reflect applicants’ experience.
**Please submit a brief cover letter that includes a few ideas for stories (no more than a sentence or two each) that you would assign if you came to do this job at Slate.
