About Small Door

Small Door is membership-based veterinary care designed with human standards that is better for pets, pet parents, and veterinarians alike. We designed and delivered a reimagined veterinary experience via a membership that includes exceptional care, 24/7 telemedicine, and transparent pricing - delivered with modern hospitality in spaces designed by animal experts to be stress-free. We opened our flagship location in Manhattan's West Village in 2020, followed by multiple practices in the city and Brooklyn. Small Door continues to scale in 2022 by opening additional NYC locations and in markets across the northeast including Boston and Washington DC.
This is the fifth company that Small Door’s founders have been involved in building. In building Small Door, they partnered with the people responsible for beloved consumer experiences like Warby Parker and Sweetgreen, in addition to healthcare innovators such as One Medical, CityMD and Flatiron Health. Small Door has raised $40 million from Lerer Hippeau, Primary Ventures, Brand Foundry, Toba Capital, and Pentland Group.  The broader management team brings experience from JustWorks, Casper, One Medical, Soulcycle, Warby Parker, Sweetgreen, The Wing, Gilt Groupe, Lightspeed, and Outbrain.

As our first chief of staff, you'll act as:
1. An air traffic controller: you are able to direct, redirect, and follow up with the team to ensure execution of key strategic projects but also prioritize what the founders should spend time on - where their input is critical vs. nice to haves;
2. An integrator: you understand how each team works together and can act as a glue between departments, locations or teams;
3. A communicator: you bridge the gap between HQ teams and practice (unit level) teams;
4. An honest broker and truth teller: because you have an unbiased view of the entire company, you have an honest view of progress or potential issues arising and point out the management’s attention to prioritize accordingly.

What you'll do

    • Team Alignment - work across the executive team and the founders’ direct reports to ensure exemplary organizational communication and coordination;
    • Advance prep for critical meetings (materials prep, data gathering to help in decision-making, note-taking, and all follow up);
    • Team-wide communication about critical company decisions. Serve as the internal consultant for our highest priority operational and strategic initiatives;
    • Work in close concert with the founders to execute on organization-wide KPIs;
    • Bring stakeholders together across marketing, operations, member experience, finance, medical, and engineering functions as you complete projects;
    • Identify operational bottlenecks and build scalable solutions that grow our business and physical footprint;
    • Leverage a wealth of disparate data sources to drive strategic decision-making.

Who you are

    • 2 - 4+ years of operations and/or strategy work - management consulting backgrounds (McKinsey, Bain, BCG) strongly preferred, with bonus points for startup experience;
    • Track record of success with demonstrated ability to problem-solve and work through ambiguity;
    • Demonstrated ability to evaluate new product opportunities by bringing internal stakeholders and existing/ new partners together;
    • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and fix problems in a hands-on manner when needed and a bias towards action;
    • Experience using data to analyze performance and drive strategic decision making; strong Excel skills desired;
    • Intellectual curiosity and research abilities;
    • Consumer Omnichannel Buff: You’re naturally drawn to the nexus of consumer x healthcare and physical x digital. We have an omnichannel offering across retail, mobile, and web, and are playing at the intersection of consumer retail, healthcare, and pets. You’re on the pulse of emerging consumer business models and are excited to be a part of a yet-to-be-defined space that we’re actively shaping.
    • Flexible and adaptable learner: You will likely have your hand in a little bit of everything, which means you’ll regularly come across situations you’ve never encountered before. You’ll need the attitude and aptitude of a learner.
    • Agile communicator: This role requires clear and broad communication. Sometimes you will be required to represent the perspective of the CEO or the President, both internally and externally. Simultaneously, you will need to find your own voice with the founders, the Leadership Team and the company as a whole.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead without authority: You will spend most of your time with all key leaders of the company so you should be comfortable assessing yourself while still being able to build strong relationships with everyone. You should also have a sophisticated mix of emotional intelligence, judgment, discretion, diplomacy, and political acumen.
    • Curious and questioning: We are in a constant state of improving and optimizing. You will be asked to proactively question our status quo and push for improvements in our processes across the business.
    • Honesty: You say what you mean and mean what you say. Your opinion matters, even if that opinion is difficult to deliver.
    • Highly organized but also detail-oriented: We’re moving fast, and things can feel chaotic sometimes. It’s critical that you can take the pace in stride and stay organized, both for you and the founders. It is also important that you are very precise and detail-oriented
