About the role
Lead the future of how we evaluate global engineering talent.
At Smart Working, we’re hiring a Head of Technical Assessments & Automations to own and scale our technical vetting strategy. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll design and calibrate assessments, integrate platforms, automate workflows, and ensure our technical hiring process identifies the very best engineers worldwide. If you can code, automate, mentor, and know what great engineering looks like, this role is for you.
What you will be doing
- Own the technical assessment strategy by designing role-specific evaluation frameworks across Back-End, Front-End, Mobile, Cloud, and CMS pipelines
- Develop and calibrate coding challenges with consistent scoring guidelines and pass/fail benchmarks
- Automate recruiting workflows, integrating assessment platforms (e.g., TestGorilla, HackerRank) with Lever ATS
- Review, score, and troubleshoot code submissions while collaborating with technical interviewers on quality calibration
- Mentor and coach evaluators and interviewers, sharing best practices for technical assessments, automation, and candidate evaluation
- Partner across teams (Sales, Talent Ops, Technical Interviewing) to align assessments with client expectations
- Lay the foundation for a future assessments team, helping to define scope, hire, and scale best practices
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and scale Smart Working’s global technical vetting strategy — ensuring assessment quality, automation, mentoring, and cross-team alignment to deliver world-class engineering talent.
Requirements (Required)
- Senior-level leadership experience mentoring and coaching globally distributed, remote-first engineering teams in roles such as CTO, Director of Engineering, and Software Development Manager
- Extensive hands-on coding background across multiple stacks, including JavaScript/TypeScript, PHP/Laravel/Symfony, .NET/C#, Python, and Java
- Proven expertise in modern architectures across front-end, back-end, mobile, CMS, and cloud, with practical knowledge of:
- Vue.js, React, Node.js, Laravel, Symfony, WordPress, WooCommerce
- iOS & Android (React Native; exposure to Swift/Kotlin/Java)
- SQL/MySQL, MongoDB
- Docker, Kubernetes, NGINX, Azure, AWS, GCP
- Strong track record with CI/CD and DevOps practices, including Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub/GitLab, and automated testing frameworks
- Advanced automation capabilities, building workflows and integrations with APIs, webhooks, Zapier, or custom scripting
- Deep understanding of web architecture, software delivery processes, and security standards (ISO 27001 certified)
- Recognized strength in mentoring and coaching engineers, including onboarding, technical training, and supporting career growth
Nice to Have
- Experience with Lever ATS workflows and custom automations
- Background in designing or calibrating technical assessments and training programs (e.g., university teaching, onboarding frameworks)
What you will learn
- You’ll be at the forefront of shaping a scalable technical assessment function that directly impacts client satisfaction and candidate quality. Expect to grow as a cross-functional leader while building automation, mentoring evaluators, defining global standards, and laying the foundation for a dedicated assessments team.
At Smart Working, you’ll never be just another remote hire.
Be a Smart Worker - valued, empowered, and part of a culture that celebrates integrity, excellence, and ambition.
If that sounds like your kind of place, we’d love to hear your story.
