Role Summary
As Tax Assistant Manager you will join our excellent ten-person global tax team, taking responsibility for delivering and managing core UK tax requirements.  Your role will be pivotal in ensuring that Sophos meets its UK tax compliance and reporting obligations in all relevant areas.  
 
This role offers an exciting opportunity to be actively involved in a broad range of UK tax issues, supported by an experienced team, but taking responsibility and working with a large degree of independence on a number of issues. The role would suit someone who has recently qualified in an accountancy firm and is looking for their first in-house tax role.  
 
We have a remote first work policy, so you will work primarily remotely. You may be required to attend periodic in person meetings at our premises in Abingdon, such as quarterly Finance All-Hands, meetings with external stakeholders, or team events.  This role will report to the EMEA Tax Director.  

What You Will Do

    • Preparation of annual UK CT returns for the business’s UK entities in co-operation with external consultants and internal stakeholders. 
    • Preparation of Transfer Pricing templates for segmented P&Ls, local file support, and the ongoing update and review of intercompany agreements. 
    • Management of the Senior Accounting Officer certification process, and Corporate Criminal Offence risk assessment and reporting. 
    • Management of the IR35 reviews and supplier onboarding process. 
    • Management of withholding tax validation process, including review and approval of certificates, regular review of rates applied, and proactive analysis and action in order to optimize the withholding tax position of the group. 
    • Support with year-end reporting and tax provisioning process. 
    • Tax advisory support on a number of topics, for example: response to new taxes such as Plastic Packaging Tax, support with HMRC enquiries strategic plans across all business units (including system upgrades, transactions, setting up presence in new territories), indirect tax input in relation to global supply chains, making tax digital, Business Risk Review etc. 

What You Will Bring

    • A minimum of three years’ experience working with UK tax issues in either a Big-4 or other large accountancy firm, or an in-house tax team. 
    • Strong UK corporate income tax technical knowledge and experience, and good awareness of other tax issues relevant to UK headquartered businesses, in particular transfer pricing. 
    • High level of analytical skills and a commercial approach to resolving issues and providing tax advice. 
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the demonstrated ability to communicate complex subjects in a clear and simple manner. 
    • Excellent organizational and writing skills. 
    • Consistently demonstrates authenticity, passion and innovation. 
    • Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and has a roll-up your sleeves mindset. 
    • Demonstrated passion and a track record of delivering in a fast-paced environment. 
    • An ability to work as part of a team as well as on their own initiative.  
    • Knowledge of SaaS and digital economy issues is preferred. 

    • Qualifications 
    • Chartered Tax Advisor, Chartered Accountant, Masters in Tax, or equivalent professional qualification.
