Role Summary

As a Legal Counsel at Sophos you will help drive the long term, sustainable growth of Sophos by managing the risks in our supplier, channel and customer contracts, negotiating prudent positions for the company with an eye to the key considerations in every different situation.  You will work with stakeholders throughout the business to understand and advise on the risks associated with commercial projects as they arise.

What You Will Do:

    • Form a key part of a small but dynamic global commercial legal team providing legal support and advice to a growing cyber security business
    • Manage a wide variety of internal customer queries using our Jira ticket system
    • Advise on legal risk on new and ongoing business projects, new go to market offerings and advise on managing the associated risks
    • Negotiate a wide variety of supplier, customer and channel agreements in varying jurisdictions globally leveraging your legal knowledge and bringing an astute commercial approach to all of them
    • Deal with a variety of contract types, some simple and others complex, prioritizing according to business need
    • Draft bespoke contracts to deal with commercial use cases in a pragmatic way that meets the business’ needs
    • Establish and maintain relationships with different parts of the business to understand Sophos’ business needs to allow your negotiations to focus on relevant risks and enable you to provide problem-solving, practical solutions
    • Identify areas for business improvement, initiating or leading change programs which enhance customer experience.  These could include things like designing and delivering training, automations and battlecards on key legal areas to assist the business to pre-empt issues
    • Work to improve processes and look for efficiencies in systems to improve our reach and help manage the company’s overall risk
    • Be an active team member, engaging in team meetings, thriving on healthy debate in an atmosphere where we all strive to learn from each other as key contributors
    • Support the team’s global workload while other team members are offline 
    • Carry out legal research as needed and know when you need to obtain advice from external counsel

What You Will Bring:

    • Qualified solicitor with experience (5 years +) in commercial law, ideally in an IT environment
    • Demonstratable problem-solving skills in contract drafting, review, red-lining, and negotiation on high stakes complex contracts under time pressure
    • Sound judgment and the ability to analyse situations and information swiftly and present your thoughts to the business in a succinct manner
    • Skilled in drafting a variety of legal contracts with an in depth appreciation for commercial law coupled with a risk based, pragmatic approach
    • The imagination to find creative solutions to meet the needs of the business whilst minimizing Sophos’ exposure to legal risks
    • A personable and open mindset, willingness to learn from all of your colleagues inside and outside of legal with a collaborative approach in a high paced work environment
    • Ability to focus on the right questions, tailor your communications to your audience and manage internal customer expectations
    • Ability to prioritize your workload, meet deadlines and see a task through to completion

    • Desirable

    • Experience dealing with public sector contracts and tender processes, particularly in the US
    • Data privacy experience
    • Experience with devising automations to serve internal clients
