Role Summary
Sophos is seeking a Director of Tax Accounting to oversee a team of three direct reports responsible for tax accounting, forecasting, and income tax matters across the Americas and Asia Pacific. This role will report to the Vice President of Global Tax. As the functional leader, you will engage with senior business leaders, manage complex tax and business issues, and collaborate extensively with internal partners and external advisors to ensure income tax compliance. As a subject matter expert in accounting standards, such as IFRS IAS 12 and US GAAP ASC 740, you will ensure compliance and manage the tax aspects of the long-term forecast. You possess strategic thinking abilities and can adapt your communication style to various audiences. In addition to managing your function, you recognize the significance of professional development and can drive impact through coaching and mentorship. 

What You Will Do

    • Foster the professional development of team members, including coaching, workload management, and performance evaluations. 
    • Remain proactive in addressing and resolving complex tax technical matters, while diligently staying up-to-date with statutory changes. 
    • Develop strategies to minimize tax risks during business changes and effectively communicate these risks to senior management. Regularly provide insightful updates to management on changes in tax accounting and the income tax landscape. 
    • Provide timely and accurate tax advice and recommendations to internal stakeholders across various departments, delivering tax training and advising on tax implications of new country expansions. 
    • Conduct due diligence and provide guidance on income tax risks, particularly in M&A scenarios. 
    • Develop and implement tax accounting policies and monitor internal income tax controls. Additionally, oversee quarterly and annual tax provision calculations, analyze deferred tax accounting, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, purchase price accounting, and differences between IFRS and US GAAP. 
    • Own and manage relationships with financial statement auditors and relevant tax authorities. 
    • Plan, coordinate, and manage all income tax filings for US Federal, state, and major foreign countries, including CbCR and Pillar II filings. Additionally, oversee the company’s co-sourced tax service provider and manage the partnership tax return compliance process, including distribution of over 700 K-1s. 
    • Create and implement change management and a long-term tax technology roadmap.  
    • Optimize the design, implementation, and management of tax accounting and compliance management technology. 
    • Oversee the defense of the company’s positions in tax audits and appeal meetings. Review responses to tax notices and queries. 
    • Manage ad hoc projects including Section 382 studies, nexus studies, and other projects as needed. 

What You Will Bring

    • 10+ years of relevant experience with a corporate tax department or an accounting firm
    • CPA, Chartered Accountant or Masters in Tax (or equivalent) with  +10 years’ experience in accounting and Corporate Tax reporting and compliance, preferably in an international environment
    • Substantive technical understanding of IFRS and US GAAP accounting
    • Strong corporate income tax technical knowledge and experience, with a focus on US tax accounting and US federal and state income tax compliance
    • Extremely strong interpersonal and communication skills with the demonstrated ability to influence business partners with varying backgrounds and experience levels, and manage cross functional projects
    • Ability to articulate complex concepts verbally and in writing in a concise and simple manner
    • Ability to think strategically while also being able to be detail oriented
    • Proven ability to identify, evaluate and mitigate tax risk
    • Solid business acumen and an understanding of business and profit drivers
    • Proven history of fostering high-performing teams focused on collaboration, professionalism and continuous improvement in a remote environment
    • Extensive experience in guiding, mentoring and coaching a team of professionals
    • Experience effectively managing tax authorities on audits
    • Hands on experience with the OneSource Tax Provision
    • Excellent organizational, communication, issue identification and writing skills
    • Consistently demonstrates authenticity, passion and innovation
    • Demonstrates intellectual curiosity and has a roll-up your sleeves mindset
    • Demonstrated passion and a track record of delivering in a fast-paced environment with the proven ability to drive change
    • Knowledge of SAAS and digital economy issues is preferred
In the United States, the base salary for this role ranges from $156,000 to $260,000. In addition to base salary, we offer additional compensation including bonus eligibility and a comprehensive benefits package.  A candidate’s specific pay within this range will depend on a variety of factors, including job-related skills, training, location, experience, relevant education, certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
