The Stencil Squad, part of the Core Experience Studio, is looking for a new Engineering Manager to take us into 2026 and beyond.
Our team is responsible for the Creative Works Platform (CWP) and the Creator System, which together underpin key pages in our mobile apps for the exploration and playback of core content types - music, audiobooks, and podcasts. We use our diverse set of skills, experiences, and tools, to identify, design, develop, test, and deploy solutions that help meet user and business needs.
As the Engineering Manager of the squad, you will play a pivotal role in leading this talented team of engineers, located across multiple European countries (some remotely and others in-office). Working with them, as well as your counterparts in Product, Design and Insights, you will help us design, build and deliver the right features, with the right level of quality, while fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. You will also be ensuring the squad's sustaining success by ensuring timely delivery, effective risk management, and efficient mitigation of issues.
What You'll Do
- Lead and manage our squad of engineers, providing guidance and support to ensure high-quality delivery, including exploring and implementing intelligent solutions (such as AI) to enhance team efficiency and development.
- Collaborate with the Product Manager to prioritise the work and maintain a roadmap that aligns with business priorities, using advanced data analysis to inform prioritization and resource allocation.
- Ensure the squad operates with speed, resilience, and reliability, meeting the engineering expectations of the company. This involves using all the means at your disposal from people and processes to automation and AI.
- Provide timely reporting of delivery progress against commitments, dependencies, issues, risks, and pro-active mitigations.
- Encourage the use of lean approaches such as MVP (minimum viable product) and A/B testing to ensure we deliver the right experiences, and explore how innovative technologies can accelerate or augment these methodologies.
- Promote good citizenship in the Spotify engineering ecosystem by following standard methodologies, and staying abreast of emerging trends and opportunities.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging the squad members to own and evolve their ways of working. Additionally, and just as importantly, provide support and development to every engineer through the highs and lows of working life.
Who You Are
- You have demonstrable success in engineering management and leadership, with an awareness of how emerging technologies, such as AI, can enhance engineering processes and team effectiveness.
- You have an experienced understanding of software engineering practices and agile methodologies and can discuss the pros and cons of common approaches in each area, including the responsible and effective integration of systems, tools, and automations.
- Your leadership and communication skills enable you to succinctly drive clarity and insight, across a diverse range of audiences, and the ability to inspire and motivate your team to a shared vision and goals, including the adoption of new, data-informed workflows.
- You can discuss your experiences working with multi-functional teams and managing complex projects, sharing both what has worked well and reflecting on what has not.
- As the squad building the foundations for many of our key mobile experiences, we need you to help us create the best experience, not just for our listeners, but also for our developers, product managers and designers.
- You are comfortable using the state-of-the-art AI tooling in a software engineering domain, and curious and engaged with emerging technologies in this space. You are be able to advocate, and demonstrate, the value of such tools and can reason about the relative merits of each.
Where You'll Be
- This role is based in London or Stockholm.
- We offer you the flexibility to work where you work best! There will be some in-person meetings, but still allows for flexibility to work from home.
