The role 

We are looking for a collaborative and solution-oriented compliance leader who is seeking a new challenge - building a new compliance framework in a new digital consumer lending business. As the first compliance hire, this individual will be responsible for designing, building, overseeing, and managing the compliance program, frameworks, and team. This highly collaborative role will work closely with other teams to proactively manage compliance risk and support the design of digital financing products and services that are consistent with regulatory requirements.

What you’ll do

    • Design, oversee, and maintain the compliance management program, as well as associated frameworks, policies, and procedures, to ensure efficient and effective adherence to applicable regulatory and legislative requirements.
    • Collaborate to establish and execute the compliance program consistent with the principles of the enterprise regulatory compliance framework to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
    • Collaborate with and advise other functions (i.e., product, partnerships, engineering, operations, credit risk) on compliance related matters to drive appropriate execution of compliance requirements.
    • Proactively identify and evaluate compliance risks across the business (e.g., across processes, products, technology) and work with the business to develop and implement appropriate processes and controls.
    • Review and assess new regulatory requirements, as well as associated reporting, testing, monitoring, and regulatory change management.
    • Build, scale, and manage the compliance team as the company grows.

What you’ll need

    • 8+ years of experience in a compliance management and/or legal role.
    • Leadership experience, preferably at a FinTech, lending company, financial services company, and/or technology company, as well as the ability to coach and inspire a team.
    • Experience collaborating with regulatory bodies such as provincial consumer protection agencies, FINTRAC, etc.
    • Strong knowledge of consumer protection laws and regulations (e.g., provincial regulations); experience working in a regulated financial services environment is a plus.
    • Demonstrated experience building, managing, and leading regulatory compliance management programs.
    • AML experience is a nice to have.
    • Proven ability to thrive in a highly ambiguous, constantly changing, high volume, and high intensity environment; startup experience preferred.
    • Ability to quickly adapt to new technologies.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities is a must.
