Lab Operations – Testing
We seek a hard-working and highly motivated Lab Technician with strong communication, collaborative, and customer service skills to work with a fun and dynamic team at Steep Hill’s California location in Berkeley.  The role of Lab Technician is extremely important and requires a multi-faceted skill set. The successful candidate and their team are responsible for converting successes in research and development into accredited and validated methods for use in a quality-control lab setting.  The ability to work across a variety of tasks, oftentimes in stressful situations, is an essential attribute for the successful candidate.

The Lab Technician reports to the Chief of Lab Operations Officer . The position is a balance of clerical tasks and hands-on laboratory work, integral to completion of day-to-day operations. The Lab Technician will be expected to work across a variety of tasks with attention to detail, organization, and professionalism.

    • Sample preparation of cannabis for testing, including Potency Analysis, Residual Solvent Analysis, and Microbiology Analysis
    • Learn and execute established Steep Hill and state regulatory SOPs 
    • Weigh out samples, perform chemical extraction, dilution of volatile solvents for High Performance Liquid Chromatography [HPLC] and Gas Chromatography [GC] analysis
    • Process of high sample throughput 
    • Load LCMS and GCMS instruments 
    • Operate automated microbiological testing equipment 
    • Clean and maintain lab and equipment, including but not limited to: incubators, laminar flow hood, fume hood, homogenizer, sonicators, microbiology medium prep, and autoclave 
    • Dispose of analyzed samples and follow proper chemical waste procedures
    • Perform appropriate lab practices
    • Wear proper personal protective equipment at all times [PPE] 
    • Organize supplies 
    • The ability to provide support and integrate seamlessly with other key departments within Steep Hill
    • Performance of other laboratory and clerical duties such as data entry, filing, or supply inventory and assumption of other responsibilities on an as-needed basis, or as delegated
    • Personal drive and commitment to ongoing improvement of the Customer Experience at Steep Hill


    • Candidate must be comfortable working with cannabis
    • Previous experience with Lab Information Management systems preferred
    • 1-2 years of prior experience in an academic or commercial lab is preferred
    • Previous experience working in a laboratory environment and/or in the cannabis industry is preferred
    • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to build a strong team
    • Ideal candidate will be a creative, analytical problem-solver who can cooperatively work effectively with colleaguesand understands and follows verbal and written instructions; works independently in the absence of supervisionIdeal candidate will possess the ability to make mathematical calculations quickly and accurately
    • The ability to adapt to rapid changes and utilize newly-emergent technological solutions; e.g. Zendesk, Xero, Slack, and Power BI, as well as company-built ERP (MyLab™)
    • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel) and GSuite (primarily Google Sheets & Google Docs)
    • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written command) with excellent computer, typing, and organizational abilities
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced setting, ability and willingness to multi-task, and the ability to prioritize and manage assignments
    • Positive attitude and willingness to work in a collaborative environment
    • Personal integrity, disciplined work ethic, organization skills, and motivation to work with a sense of urgency
    • Must be available to work nights and weekends


    • Candidate must be at least 21 years old
    • Valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record
    • Candidate must possess Associates Degree in Science or 2 years of college course work or completed Bachelor of Science Degree
    • Minimum 1 years’ experience analyzing data acquired using instruments such as HPLC, UPLC, GCMS, ICPMS
