The Role @ The Chinese Room

We’re starting pre-production on a brand-new, original IP and we’re looking for world-class designers and coders to join this exciting development. It’s going to be a first-person action adventure for multiple platforms, including next-gen consoles. If sounds like fun, then we’d love to hear from you. 

You’re fast and efficient, not afraid to experiment and work with designers on iterations. You’re a great communicator and love working as part of a team where you play an active role in helping shape the game and its development.

Experience is not critical and we're open to supporting your development as a junior animator, if this is a role and organisation you're interested in we'd love to hear from you!

Within this role you will:

    • Production of high-quality hand-keyed and/or motion captured animation
    • Gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of animation
    • Contribute to the conceptualisation of character behaviours and abilities
    • Help to design and implement gameplay features in collaboration with programmers and designers in-engine
    • Meet production schedules and deadlines
    • Communicate effectively with peers

We need you to have:

    • Ideally a few years game experience
    • Passion for playing games and an up-to-date knowledge of current industry trends
    • Knowledge of at least one major 3D package (preferably Maya)
    • Experience is using game engines (particularly Unreal 4) is highly preferable
    • Able to reconcile the desire for high-quality animation with the functionality requirements of code and game design
    • Experience with MotionBuilder is a plus
    • Good written and oral communication skills

Our titles include the ground-breaking Dear Esther (2012), cult horror Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (2013), the VR fairy-tale So Let Us Melt (2017) and the open-world adventure Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture (2015), a PlayStation 4 exclusive that won major awards across the world. This included an amazing 10 BAFTA nominations and 3 BAFTA wins.

The Chinese Room is located in Brighton in the south of England, home to an amazingly vibrant game development scene and a cultural hotspot with fantastic food, arts, music, shopping and sports. The studio is directly opposite a gorgeous park and we’re only a short hop from the city centre, the beach, and the South Downs National Park. Gatwick Airport is only half an hour away from train, and you can be in central London in just over an hour. It’s an easy place to love!
