Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is a global leader in the protection of unaccompanied and separated children who are forcibly displaced from their countries of origin. Launched in 2008, KIND champions a world in which every child’s rights and well-being are protected throughout their journey to safety. 
 
Building on its extensive programming and successful model in the United States, KIND is expanding in the Americas and Europe to bring its experience to bear in working with unaccompanied and separated children. Our work focuses on addressing the legal and mental health needs of this population; building strong partnerships and engaging in training and capacity strengthening with governments, NGOs, and the private sector; and advocating for systemic and pragmatic reforms to advance the rights of unaccompanied and separated children.

Position Summary:

The Chief Facilities Officer (CFaO) reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and is entrusted with the vital responsibility of overseeing and managing KIND's expanding worldwide physical infrastructure and facilities. This role plays a crucial part in guaranteeing that the organization's facilities are optimally aligned with its mission and operational needs. Serving as the principal advisor to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer on matters pertaining to office operations and facilities, the CFaO leads the strategic planning for KIND's facilities, both in the short and long term, to ensure they provide a safe and suitable environment that fully supports the organization's programs.

As a member of the senior leadership team, the Chief Facilities Officer will actively champion the mission of KIND. Moreover, they will foster collaboration with internal and external stakeholders throughout the organization, working closely on both operational and programmatic fronts.

This a headquarters position based remotely from any location in the U.S.

Essential Functions:

    • General Management Office Operations and Facilities:

    • Overall responsibility for the management of the Office Operations & Facilities Department.
    • Oversees the daily operations of all KIND facilities in its global portfolio.
    • Continually seeks out opportunities to enhance the efficiency of KIND’s office operations and facilities.
    • Develops, implements, and oversees standard operating procedures (SOP) aimed at tracking and enhancing efficiency and effectiveness with a dedicated emphasis on delivering high-quality services and upholding best practices.
    • Oversees the delivery of facilities management helpdesk services and systems with a focus on operational efficiency.
    • Recruits, mentors, and leads a dynamic team, ensuring their adept handling of operational challenges and proficient resolution of issues with a "customer-first" approach, consistently delivering high-quality results.

    • Space Planning and Design:

    • Overall responsibility for the planning, build-out, and maintenance of organization facilities.
    • Possesses experience in creating environments tailored for children or having connections with a well-established community of experts proficient in designing such spaces.
    • Contributes to strategic planning by evaluating, projecting future facility needs, and proposing options in achievement of organizational outcomes.
    • Conducts in-depth, forward-looking assessments to determine space requirements, analyzes diverse strategies for fulfilling those needs, and presents leadership with well-informed recommendations for acquisition methods. This includes crafting comprehensive plans that chart the future trajectory of KIND's facilities.
    • Conducts analysis of all leasing expenses and formulate phased plans, budget projections, and schedules to strategically position the organization for the future.
    • Oversees the effective utilization of office space and consistently explore innovative "ways of working" to optimize KIND's office environment, tailored to the specific needs of the population served, particularly child clients.
    • Provides strategic guidance to leadership regarding the allocation of space and office accommodations within KIND facilities.

    • Budgeting and Financial Management:

    • Ensures compliance with lease specifications, regulatory requirements, and other contractual terms and conditions.
    • Negotiates, manages, and administers contracts relating to the general operations of facilities.
    • Plays an integral role in shaping the procurement strategy and participates in benchmarking projects within facilities management, working in tandem with the procurement and contracts team.
    • Formulates the annual facilities budget and diligently monitors both short-term and long-term expenses, as well as equipment and resource requirements. Evaluates year-end financial reconciliations and offer insightful recommendations to ensure the efficient operation of facilities and lease administration.
    • Oversees and executes the annual inventory of property and equipment, while maintaining an ongoing record of the condition, utilization, location, and storage of KIND assets.

    • Compliance and Safety

    • Collaborates closely with the Chief Safety and Security Officer to maintain a safe and secure environment within facilities.
    • Ensures facilities meet physical ADA and all other applicable local, state, and federal compliance standards.

Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Undergraduate degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, business administration or related field.
    • Minimum of 10 years of leadership experience demonstrating a track record of delivering successful global security management, design, development, and implementation.
    • Technically adept in all aspects of facility planning, design, construction management and facilities operations.
    • Executive presence with exceptional communication and relationship building skills; effective at building trust and the ability to deal directly with stakeholders across all levels of the company.
    • Excellent knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in researching and remaining current with evolving trends in office space utilization, alongside a keen awareness of dynamic legal and regulatory shifts.
    • Demonstrated record as action-taker and experience successfully creating strategies and executing plans to meet organizational objectives are required.
    • Expertise in understanding business and program issues and the ability to assess and address related security needs in collaboration with unit leaders and senior management are required.
    • Exceptional managerial skills with a successful track record building and leading high-performing security teams in achieving desired outcomes is required.
    • Exceptional leadership and innovation skills; including change management, diplomacy, strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to build trust, unquestioned integrity, and pragmatism, are required.
    • Effective management of vendor relationships.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites (such as Teams, Excel, etc.).
    • Ability to work collaboratively and multi-task in our KIND environment, managing numerous priorities and emerging opportunities.
    • Excellent organizational skills with ability to work on multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment. Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate as appropriate

$185,000 - $210,000 a year
