Are you a data scientist looking to dive into a new challenge? At Tech Nation we’re looking for a Senior Insights Manager/ Data scientist to join the team to take the lead on data focused components of projects to ensure the delivery makes an impact.  Your primary focus will be delivering these projects - making key contributions through the application of data analytics. This may include the use of web, official and open data. Alongside this work, you will be required to develop on new insights work, projects and contribute to commercial opportunities.

Focus of the role:

    • Be a leader in data science: Do analysis specifically data analysis on open, web based and official data
    • Lead on technical decisions: Be the point of contact in the team for data related enquiries
    • Collaborate with members of the Team: Provide expertise, data support and advice on technical and non-technical issues associated with data analysis
    • Knowledge of agile: Understand the implementation of Agile and Kanban methods and promote a development environment that is agile, fast-paced, and iterative
    • Creating change: be willing and enthusiast to spearhead adoption of data best practices, standards, and governance
    • A data pioneer: Actively look for ways to work with the organisation through everyday activities to increase the robustness and authority with which data is used in Tech Nation, and specifically Insights projects
    • Implement processes: Look into good practice related to of data collection, storage, sharing, modelling, analysis, visualisation and management
    • Implement a roadmap: Put in place a data analysis plan or roadmap that you will implement through your work with the team
    • Suggest improvement opportunities: Identify solutions to technical challenges to support the Insights team

On a day to day basis you will be involved in:

    • Initial 1-3 month period will include: Understand ways of working at Tech Nation, working with the Insights team to identify opportunities in existing project involvement
    • Project work: Work on short to medium term projects, to include data scoping, collection/ procurement, analysis, interpretation and writing up
    • Meetings with team members: Including daily Insights team standup
    • Assist insights Leads: Assist with short term media queries and internal requests
    • The following 6-12 month period will include: Take the lead on data processes at Tech Nation, including working with Insights analyst on the creation of a data roadmap for Insights that could be used across the organisation
    • Developing and leading opportunities: Leading on commercial and non- commercial projects at Tech Nation
    • Professional development: Working with academic, and industry colleagues to develop personal data analysis capabilities and considering the role that you could play in developing an upskilling programme for the organisation

The skills and experience you are likely to have:

    • Enjoy building something with other people, and love to see how your analysis and insights has a real-world impact
    • Highly statistically able - experience and ability to work with a range of data from official statistics, to web data (and everything in between)
    • Highly developed understanding of statistical methods
    • Appreciation of the economic, social and cultural contexts of work on the tech industry
    • Curious about broader economic trends, and the impact that this has on skills, firms and government
    • Understanding of how to implement good practice solutions when it comes to data processing and cleaning
    • A working knowledge of data standards - implementing, documenting and replicating the ways that data is described and recorded - is a plus
    • Expert in data analysis packages such as R, SQL, SPSS, Stata and MatLab
    • Experience in statistical modelling and/ or machine learningKnowledge about the UK tech sector, key challenges and ecosystem stakeholders
