About Tech Talent: The Tech Talent Project is a nonpartisan, nonprofit project dedicated to increasing the ability of the U.S. government to recruit modern technical leaders in order to achieve critical economic, policy, and human outcomes.

Position Summary

The US government faces a digital literacy gap - putting at risk its ability to serve Americans effectively, protect our democracy, attract and retain top technical talent, and compete on a global stage. At its core, our mission is to help close that gap by matching top technologists with highly impactful opportunities in government. These opportunities will make a positive impact on millions of people’s lives and have the ability to change outdated systems and structures that have been largely neglected or overlooked. From unemployment insurance to SNAP benefits, our government’s ability (or inability) to deliver technology effectively has a significant impact on outcomes for families and communities.

This role is imperative to the growth and mission of Tech Talent. We aim to clearly communicate and amplify our innovative strategies, and develop content that government leaders can immediately apply to their public facing services - as well as assist with messaging and direct outreach to technologists. The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director and leads all of our internal and external communications strategies for stakeholders within the private and public sectors. This includes overseeing implementation of communications and content strategies, creating written assets, media relations, and messaging to and from our community and government partners.

This leader will be responsible for operating with a high degree of political savvy, discretion, and a sensitivity to diverse viewpoints and experiences. This role requires managing multiple competing priorities, exhibiting a leadership style that is grounded in empathy, and the ability to produce polished, professional communications, while also maintaining a sense of urgency and a sense of humor.

    • Minimum of three years managing people and/or vendors.
    • A body of work that spans strategic and tactical executions across a variety of communications methods including writing content (memos, white papers, journalistic articles, briefings), storytelling, creating marketing assets and digital copy, and PR and media relations.
    • If you have experience across half or more of these elements but not all, that’s ok! We’re interested in learning more about you.
