The Free Press Fellowship is a two-year, highly selective program for aspiring journalists.

The first year commences in each Fellow’s senior year of college (or 20th year of life), to be followed by a yearlong, full-time position at The Free Press. In the first year, students will work on an hourly basis to contribute to The Free Press across all of our teams––editorial, video, audio, and business.

Following graduation, Fellows will earn a one-year, full-time position at The Free Press. Between graduation and September 1, The Free Press team will work with each Fellow to agree upon a title that encompasses the strengths, interests, and ambitions they have showcased in their first year in the fellowship program. For some, this will mean Junior Reporter or Editorial Assistant. For others, this might mean a Junior Producer or Data Analyst role.

In the second year, Fellows will be fully enmeshed in The Free Press newsroom in New York. They will attend all editorial meetings, work closely with their mentors and managers, and have the opportunity to write and report pieces of their own, in addition to supporting our other reporters with research and sourcing. They will also have the opportunity to work with our video, audio, and events team.

As Free Press Fellows, success may look different for each person. For some, it might mean going on TV to discuss a scoop. For others, it could mean producing an event for our growing community.

Upon the completion of the two-year program, Fellows who have demonstrated a deep understanding and commitment to our values may be offered a full-time position at The Free Press, which will be discussed at the culmination of the Fellowship with each fellow’s respective manager.
