The Free Press is a new media company founded by Bari Weiss and built on the ideals that once were the bedrock of great journalism: honesty, doggedness, and fierce independence. We publish investigative stories and provocative commentary about the world as it actually is—with the quality once expected from the legacy press, but the fearlessness of the new. Originally called Common Sense, we focus on stories that are ignored or misconstrued in the service of an ideological narrative. For us, curiosity isn’t a liability. It’s a necessity.
As Art Director, you will work closely with the Managing Editor, Head of Audio and Video, events team, and our Photo Editor to ensure that our visuals are best in class wherever our audience encounters The Free Press. You’ll be responsible for managing and executing visuals across the Free Press brand, including print products, podcasts, videos, and live events. You’ll help source and design art for a diverse slate of editorial products, manage a growing team of photo and art editors, commission freelancers and contractors for various projects, and collaborate with the product design and social media teams as we expand across new and existing media to make sure that The Free Press brand is integrated and maintained.
Responsibilities
- Conceptualize and implement a coherent aesthetic across the entire company
- Oversee the sourcing, production, and organization of all photo and art assets for stories, special series, and our suite of newsletters
- Oversee the editorial layout of individual stories and The Free Press site, plus our social channels
- Occasionally source and produce photo and design assets Coordinate with the Managing Editor and print team to ensure all articles have compelling art that informs the piece and channels our editorial vision
- Commission freelance illustrators and photographers for time-sensitive shoots around the world
- Work with events team to create compelling visual packages (assets, programs, signage) for our live events
- Make sure our branding is integrated into book clubs, live videos, social feeds, community events, and more
Requirements
- Incredibly good taste, an obsession with detail, a willingness to roll your sleeves up and execute
- At least 5 years working as an art director for a news media company
- Demonstrated experience producing high-quality work on tight deadlines
- Fluency in Adobe suite and Content Management System platforms
- Eagerness to learn tools and software to aid in bringing our content to life
- A passion for The Free Press: You’ve read our stories, you understand our mission, and you know just how you can bring value to our team
- Embrace of a scrappy start-up environment with a willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed
- Sense of humor and start-up experience are a plus!
$100,000 - $150,000 a year
