At our core, The Free Press is proudly a subscription business, and we’re looking for someone to run that central part of who we are—someone who will become obsessed with our readers. The Head of Subscriptions at The Free Press is responsible for growing our paid subscription business and revenues. This leader will create and implement a holistic strategy that spans from top-of-funnel subscriber acquisition strategies, paid marketing, conversion optimization, and retention. The role will report to the COO and work closely with the editorial leadership team to define and execute our free and paid value proposition toward our audience. Our subscribers are diverse in the true sense of the word—politically, racially, and geographically—and we’re looking for someone who can guide the business to serve this broad and deeply engaged community. 

Responsibilities

    • Develop and implement a strategy of sustainable subscriber monetization including growth, conversion, retention, reactivation, and pricing strategy.
    • Analyze and define relevant audience segments to derive insights for commercial and editorial strategy and assess relevant addressable market size to inform strategy.
    • Build insights from analyzing reader and subscriber behavior across our platform.
    • Setting, tracking, and communicating KPIs for subscription across the organization.
    • Oversee paid marketing across various channels and optimize efficacy of paid spend.
    • Partner with business development and sales to create opportunities for sponsorships and unique experiences that benefit our subscriber growth.
    • Work with our audio, video, live, and events producers to create and implement audience development strategies.
    • Partner with leaders across the company in editorial, business, and technology to ensure a holistic approach to our growth.
    • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements related to subscriptions and customer data management.
    • Develop strategies around community engagement, subscriber meetups, and our comments section.

Qualifications

    • Experience in a leadership role within a content-based consumer subscription business.
    • Experience working in media, publishing, and/or journalism preferred.
    • Experience with paid marketing strategies and funnel optimization.
    • Strong analytical, data, and presentation skills.
    • Ability to work across internal teams, external partners, and vendors to implement this strategy.
    • Willingness to work both hands-on and as a strategic thinker.
    • An embrace of a scrappy start-up environment with a willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed.
$150,000 - $250,000 a year
Final offers for this job will be made within the parameters of this range, taking into account experience. In addition to a competitive salary, The FP offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans and long-term incentive & bonus programs.
