To support our ambitious commercial goals, we’re expanding our world-class Product division to drive the next stage of our development. In this newly created role, you’ll be working in a hybrid channel and mission org alongside Architects, Product Researchers, Data Scientists and Engineers to help us revolutionise the travel experience and develop a market leading product and features. The goals are ambitious and the mandate is clear – to make travel more personal.
Our app sits at the heart of everything we do – 84% of all traffic to Trainline comes through this channel - and we’re proud of the world class product we’ve built. Led by Dave Slocombe, our Senior Product Director, the App team strive to evolve our product into an international, real-time, smart prediction, travel companion. They’re driving leading edge innovation and customer experience across both the Travel Tech and eCommerce sectors joining data from across the world that has never been done before.
As Principal Product Owner, your challenge will be to deliver new, disruptive features and critical functionality across the UK and international markets. You’ll play a leading part in the product execution of Trainline’s ever growing proposition on mobile re-imagining what travel looks like. The opportunities before us are immense and even more exciting particularly with our proposition around e-ticketing and the environmental impact changing the way our customers travel can bring.
Constant innovation is part of the team’s DNA – it’s all about customizing app functionality to give users a unique experience. You may have seen our new SplitSave feature launched earlier this year that finds smart combinations of multiple train tickets to ‘split’ customers’ journeys, giving huge savings without disrupting their travel plans. Similarly, this was the birth place of BusyBot, an app extension we invented that uses crowd sourcing data to provide travellers with real-time information about the train they’re on to guide them to a seat. Here, we pushed from ideation to release within a week…and that’s where you come in.
We ship new products at speed and employ a ‘build/test/learn’ mentality around our product development. To this end, you’ll proactively seek out and solve the toughest problems we’re told can’t be done and delivering relevant solutions for our customers. This is a truly career defining role for someone passionate about product management looking for an opportunity to disrupt and define a product that will change the way people travel impacting millions of people every day.
We’re looking for creative big thinkers with small egos to achieve our ambitious plans. Most importantly, you’ll bring deep app experience and a passion for building amazing products that people love and will ideally from a consumer-focused tech business. Your great Product credentials go without saying, and you’ll have a ‘super power’ that differentiates your approach – be it design, customer experience, engagement or such like. Ground breaking experience is critical, and you should have a meaningful tale to tell about the innovation you have led across mobile, whether launching the first iteration of a trailblazing new product or reinventing an existing feature.
A strong focus on rapid testing and validation is critical as you explore new opportunities, and you’ll understand the importance of making robust data-driven decisions. Similarly, you’ll bring a good balance of quantitative and qualitative skills and a track record of working with rapid, iterative “customer led” design and development processes.
Product is no exact science and a mindset geared around optimisation and iteration is key. You’ll understand that Product teams fail as many times as they succeed albeit you’re capable of getting to the root of these challenges. Further, bringing demonstrably strong experience at working at pace be it from a start-up or corporate environment, you’ll have previously worked across the end-to-end product lifecycle, and have a solid growth story to tell.
