Full-time
Trainline is an innovative, tech business with a mission to make travel as simple, seamless and affordable as possible. We’re proud to be Europe’s leading independent train and coach platform and rank among the highest-rated travel and ticketing apps globally. Today, we offer our customers travel to thousands of destinations in and across 36 countries in Europe and beyond. That’s more than £2.3 billion in ticket sales annually, and over 60 million visits to our apps and websites each month.

Our culture is central to our success. We’re driven to sustain our phenomenal growth from recent years, and this means we’re always working closely and collaboratively to turn our ideas into reality. It’s this sense of pace, innovating and improving pretty much everything we do, that makes Trainline so exciting and unique - we truly believe our work has a genuine impact and will change travel for the better.

To support our ambitious commercial goals, we’re expanding our world-class Product division, led by Jonathon Moore (a Product leader in Digital & Technology) to drive the next stage of our development. The goals are ambitious and the mandate is clear – to make travel more personal. Your challenge will be to help turn this mission from vision into reality.

You’ll be joining a growing team of highly talented Product Designers working in small, agile, full stack teams alongside Product Owners, Product Researchers, Data Scientists and Engineers to help us revolutionise the travel experience. We employ a ‘build/test/learn’ mentality around our product development so you’ll proactively seek out and solve the biggest problems we’re told can’t be done, and deliver elegant solutions to complex problems.

You will champion the need to deeply understand customer needs and build simple, creative solutions to solve complex customer problems. With a strong understanding of both interaction and visual design, you will own the design experience through the full product process validating big disruptive ideas, undertaking detailed iterations or implementing visual micro interactions.
Helping our customers feel smart and empowered is a part of our DNA and inventiveness, and innovation plays an important role in that. Paired with creativity, this leads to things like predictive pricing (the best time to buy), BusyBot (the best carriage should I get on to get a seat) and real-time travel companion (your proactive journey support).

We work at speed. We ship new products every fortnight and you will play an important part in helping drive this momentum. You will lead design sprints and rapid iterative ‘discovery’ streams using various prototyping tools and usability tests validating ideas quickly and minimising engineering effort. With the future of Trainline clearly centered around expansion into Europe, mobile tickets, door-to-door journey planning and multi-modal travel, it’ll be your job to explore a variety of critical opportunities whilst helping Trainline realise our future vision.

Experience

We’re looking for creative big thinkers with small egos who want to build relevant and long-lasting solutions on behalf of our partners such as Virgin Trains, CrossCountry, Northern and others. As an experienced and passionate design professional, you’ll be a visual and interaction designer in equal parts. In addition, you’ll have experience in running design workshops and bring a user centred design approach to everything you do. You’ll know what ‘great’ looks like and drive towards that relentlessly. You'll be comfortable working with remote dev teams working in other time zones and communicating with external stakeholders.

You enjoy complex design challenges, validating ideas with data and customer research, and understand that success is positively impacting customer behaviour, not just about shipping a release. You’ll bring experience designing digital products and systems, not just websites. Additionally, you will be a true self-starter who can deeply collaborate with Engineers and Product Owners. We use Sketch, Zeplin and Marvel here day-to-day, so a working knowledge of these as well as HTML, CSS and Javascript would be a bonus.
