System Administrator - Microsoft 365 and On-Prem

We are excited to announce a new opportunity for a System Administrator to join our team. The Microsoft 365 and On-Prem System Administrator will help oversee the day-to-day operations of the Tom James IT infrastructure - ensuring systems are secure, efficient, and available to support business operations. This includes administering Microsoft 365 tenants, managing and configuring servers, networks, and related hardware/software, troubleshooting issues, and implementing solutions to maintain system performance and security.


Key Responsibilities

    • Microsoft 365 Administration: Help manage, configure, and license Microsoft cloud-based productivity services including Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive.   
    • System Management: Install, configure, and maintain servers (physical and virtual), operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux, Unix), and software applications.
    • Network Administration: Monitor and manage network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls, to ensure connectivity and performance.
    • Security: Implement and maintain security measures, including firewalls, antivirus software, and patch management, to protect systems from threats.
    • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues in a timely manner to minimize downtime. Work with Help Desk on escalated tickets. 
    • Backup and Recovery: Develop and maintain backup strategies to ensure data integrity and perform disaster recovery operations when needed.
    • User Management: Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls to ensure secure and efficient access to systems and resources. 
    • Performance Monitoring: Monitor system performance, analyze logs, and optimize configurations to ensure reliability and scalability. 
    • Documentation: Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps. 
    • Automation: Develop scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) to automate routine tasks and improve system efficiency. 
    • Collaboration: Work with IT teams, vendors, and stakeholders to implement new technologies, upgrades, or system migrations. 
    • Compliance: Ensure systems comply with organizational policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).  

The ideal candidate would have experience in the following:

    • Microsoft 365 (required)
    • Microsoft Active Directory (on prem) and Entra
    • Meraki and SonicWall firewalls, switches, and WAP’s
    • Nutanix AHV Hyperconverged appliances
    • Sentinel One and Reliaquest Greymatter security platforms
    • Unitrends, Barracuda, and HYCU backups
    • Citrix and Remote Desktop Services
    • Dell Servers
    • IBM i Servers

Qualifications

    • Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience). 
    • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in system administration, network management, or a related IT role. Microsoft 365 experience required. 

Skills

    • Proficiency with operating systems (e.g., Windows Server and Desktop, Linux, IBM i). 
    • Knowledge of virtualization platforms (e.g., Nutanix AHV, Hyper-V,). 
    • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). 
    • Experience with network protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP). 
    • Scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Bash). 
    • Understanding of cybersecurity best practices and tools. 
    • Strong problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills; ability to work independently and in a team.  

Work Environment

    • On-site presence required with some Remote work possible when needed.
    • May require on-call availability for after-hours support or emergencies. 
    • Ability to lift and manage hardware (e.g., servers, networking equipment). 
    • Light travel may be required.
