As part of the Hardware department at Tonal, the Firmware team helps build our intelligent fitness system from the ground up. We enjoy the opportunity to create a great product and to expand our technical breadth in the process. The Firmware team works across several embedded domains from wirelessly connected sensors to high powered motor control.  We leverage embedded processors running anything from bare metal to Android to create a device that delivers an exceptional and seamless user experience.

We are looking for an expert level Firmware Engineer to lead, mentor and help build out the Tonal FW team. What You Will Do

    • Design and develop our embedded software systems
    • Work with Product Management, Mechanical and Electrical teams to understand and derive product requirements
    • Integrate new sensors, improve control systems, implement and debug features
    • Work with Software, Backend, and Design teams to drive feature implementation 
    • Maintain a high bar for product quality, safety and user experience
    • Work with Tonal recruiters to help build out a diverse FW Team
    • Work with direct reports to foster a collaborative environment and build ownership and empowerment
    • Identify and highlight opportunities to improve our processes and build bridges with other teams
    • Help the FW team as a whole establish best practices for development, test, and deployment

Who You Are

    • 10+ years firmware development experience
    • Experience leading technical projects
    • Experience mentoring engineers who are subject matter experts in areas outside of your strengths
    • A trusting, yet hands-on, leader that wants to help remove roadblocks for the team
    • Well versed in helping others push past their own boundaries
    • Team player with high integrity and high degree of self-awareness
    • Expert C development - experience in C++, Java, Python is also valuable
    • Experience with several of the following areas: High power BLDC/PMSM motor control; Sensors and actuators; Developing safety critical systems; Communication protocol development; or Bluetooth and/or BLE
    • Extensive knowledge of embedded development best practices and tools
    • Creative problem solver who is not afraid to push the boundaries and think differently
    • High attention to detail
    • Great oral and written communication skills
    • Open to feedback and constantly striving to improve
