About the role

This position is for the digital design (UI/UX, visual, marketing design) role on our team. You will be responsible for designing all interactions with our apps (mobile & web), branding, and the overall user experience.

We are a small team of 20 and this is our first design hire, so there will be tons of room to expand scope to other design functions as well.

Must Haves
Strong visual design skills in digital product design and branding
Experience designing mobile and web applications
Brand experience and brand/marketing design
Able to permeate a cohesive design/brand through all user facing aspects
Able to create a design system for the digital product experience

What we're looking for
Audience Understanding
This person needs to understand and be able to design for both sets of our audience – older adults and caregivers. They should have a feeling for what features and aspects of our product will be targeted towards which group and be able to cater accordingly.

This person needs to design with purpose and must be able to articulate clearly their decisions as well as the possible alternatives. “It looks good” should never be a justification. The design presented should never be a “first stab.” Iterations and alternatives should presented alongside the primary proposal with an explanation for why the proposal was selected.

This person must be self-critical, receptive to feedback, and always learning. They must believe that his or her own ideas should constantly improve and iterate, and that those improvements can from anyone within the company. While this person may be the first visual designer, theirs is not the only opinion that matters when making design decisions.

This person should be asking questions of everyone – users, team members, design agencies – not just to get a complete picture of his or her problem at hand, but also to have a more complete picture of the product and technology. The direction on some aspects of this person’s job will also be fairly ambiguous, so they must be able to navigate the uncertainty by asking questions.

This person should believe in the power of data-driven decision-making and A/B testing

…but not pixel-perfect. This person needs to emphasize and believe in polish and the small details (micro-interactions, animation) without being inflexible. We are a startup; we have to move fast and have everyone on that same velocity.

This person needs to have the willingness to jump into any aspect of design willingly – UI, UX, graphic, motion, photography, video. They may only specialize in one or two, but that shouldn’t prevent them from giving it a go.

Being the first hire, this person will have a lot of solo work. They must show an ability to work on a large project alone.
