Our Machine Learning (ML) team is looking for Research Scientists in the broad area of ML Safety, including FATE-ML (Fairness, Accountability, Openness, and Ethics), to study the socio-technical limits of Computer Vision (cf. FATE-CV) and its broad applications in Robotics. We are aiming to make progress on some of the most important scientific challenges around the safe and effective usage of large robotic fleets, simulation, and prior knowledge (physics, proven experience, behavioral science), not only for automation but also for human augmentation.
As a Research Scientist, you will work with a multidisciplinary team combining research in learning theory (e.g., generalization guarantees, distributional and adversarial robustness, causal ML) with data, robot, and AI ethics (e.g., FAT-ML, DEI, privacy-preserving learning systems, governance principles, value alignment, XAI). You will work closely with other ML scientists and roboticists to invent principles and tools with a wide impact: from providing guarantees when ML pipelines are safe (or warn when not), to helping ensure compliance with AI regulations (and maybe even guide their definition), while helping roboticists bring to bear Computer Vision in alignment with user values and needs, at both personal and societal levels. Thanks to Toyota's human-centric values, safety culture, and experience in safety-critical products, your inventions have the potential to ensure Computer Vision is used for good, at scale. Responsibilities and required qualifications are as follows:
- Conduct ambitious research in ML Safety for Computer Vision in Robotics that solves open problems of high scientific, practical, and/or ethical value and validate it in real-world benchmarks and systems.
- Partner with a multidisciplinary team including other research scientists and engineers across the ML team, TRI, Toyota, and our university partners.
- Stay up to date on the state-of-the-art in Machine Learning and Safety ideas.
- Present results in verbal and written communications, internally, at top international venues, and via open-source contributions to the community.
- Lead collaborations with our external research partners and mentor research interns.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Robotics, Control Theory, or related fields (Ph.D. preferred but not necessary).
- Expertise in Computer Vision and at least one key ML Safety area among Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, AI Ethics, Learning Theory, Causality, or related fields.
- Proven track record in the aforementioned areas, such as (but not limited to) publications at high-impact conferences/journals.
- Some experience with one or more coding languages and systems, preferably python, Unix, and a DL framework (e.g., PyTorch).
- You can identify, propose, and lead new research projects, working in collaboration with other researchers and engineers to complete it from initial idea to working solution.
- You are passionate about the aforementioned topics, especially in the space of Automated Driving, Robotics, and for societal good in general.
- You are a reliable team player. You like to think big and go deeper. You care about openness and delivering with integrity.
