GIS Specialist

The UES Reno office seeks an experienced GIS Specialist to support project managers and office staff across a range of disciplines and project types. We seek a candidate who works well with others as part of a multidisciplinary team but is also independent and can work efficiently with little guidance or oversight when necessary. This position will report to the GIS Department Manager but will regularly support project managers in other departments including NEPA, hydrology, biology, air quality, and environmental remediation. Responsibilities may include project management, general geospatial support and oversight, data QAQC and standardization, and program development (developing standard operating procedures, templates, custom tools, etc.). The ideal candidate will be fully proficient with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online and have basic familiarity with or ability to quickly learn other GIS software/applications.  Common tasks will include preparing maps and report figures, drone data processing, field support (setting up field maps, GPS collection systems, data QAQC, etc.), providing data packages to clients and regulators, and basic spatial analysis. Experience with NEPA, mining and mineral exploration, utilities, environmental compliance, and/or renewable energy is highly preferred.

Required Qualifications:

    • Degree or certificate in GIS/Geography/Geospatial sciences, environmental science, or related field (Direct and relevant experience will also be considered in lieu of degree or certificate).
    • Minimum 3 years relevant GIS work experience.
    • Proficient with common geospatial data formats (geodatabases, shapefiles, geotiffs, etc.) and Esri software suite including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, Survey123, and basic use of ArcMap.
    • Demonstrated data management experience, including standardization, implementation of QAQC and best practices, performance optimization, and metadata management.
    • Ability to independently manage multiple concurrent assignments, switch gears often, set job task priorities, and work with limited direct supervision to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
    • Ability and willingness to follow direction from multiple project managers and maintain a positive attitude as a member of diverse interdisciplinary teams.
    • Working knowledge and ability to quickly learn the GIS requirements specific to multiple disciplines with differing needs.
    • Demonstrated experience applying standard cartographic methods, theories, and principles with acute attention to detail.
    • Experience conducting basic spatial analysis with ability to establish and/or follow best practices and standard operating procedures.
    • Attend meetings with clients, regulators, and consultants in a professional manner.
    • Ability and willingness to develop cost estimates, proposals, schedules, and project plans.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • 5 years or more of relevant GIS Experience.
    • Experience with drone operation, photogrammetry, remote sensing, big data management and processing, FAA Part 107 pilot certification a plus.
    • Familiarity with the NEPA process and data standards of federal agencies.
    • Experience working with CAD data formats, technical drawings, and/or records of survey.
    • Experience with task automation and/or scripting.
