Position Summary:  
As a Geotechnical Field Professional, you will perform both field and technical assignments under the coaching of mid-to-senior level geotechnical engineers. You will perform a variety of tasks, which should develop knowledge and abilities required to apply standard techniques, procedures and criteria, and which also provide experience and familiarization with the staff, methods, practices and programs of the company. Typical duties and responsibilities may include but not be limited to analyses of work according to standard geotechnical procedures on simple projects or on parts of more complex projects, performing and/or reviewing data for correctness of own data. The Geotechnical Field Professional will work directly with other Geotechnical and Drilling personnel. 

Job Responsibilities:

    • Travel safely to various job sites in a company provided vehicle; maintain company vehicle (schedule oil changes, inside/outside upkeep and complete monthly vehicle inspection reports)
    • Field engineering duties including: data reduction, analysis & fieldwork for commercial and residential projects
    • Assist with project management & reporting
    • Field inspection of geotechnical sites, sampling & testing of soils
    • Assist with sampling and data needed for geotechnical reports
    • Site reconnaissance, laying out borings, one-call tickets, preparation of field instructions
    • Visual classification of soils and preparation of boring logs
    • Perform hand auger borings with dynamic cone penetrometer testing
    • Test Pit observation and reporting
    • Assist with double-ring infiltration tests and ReMi testing
    • Assist as backup drilling helper for Geotechnical drilling
    • Assist other geotechnical professionals as needed
    • Communicate daily with Geotechnical and Drilling staff and clients both verbally and electronically
    • Complete and prepare accurate and detailed field reports on a daily basis
    • Follow all company safety procedures and policies
    • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications & Skills:

    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • Must be at least 18 years old for entry onto job sites
    • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
    • Required: 1-4 years of relevant field/construction environment experience and/or office geotechnical engineering experience
    • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook with the ability to learn commercial and engineering design software applications
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and organize data
    • Strong written and verbal communication and ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in written form with the use technology/computers
    • Ability to accurately apply mathematical principles, display proper use of spatial recognition, define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Project Managers and if needed, clients, potential customers and the general public
    • Ability to read and interpret ASTM standards and construction documents
    • Ability to accurately complete field paperwork as prescribed
    • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, detailed reports, short correspondence and memos

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:

    • Days and hours for this position are typically Monday-Friday with some weekends, holidays and overtime as needed
    • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments
    • Field work on outside construction sites involving long-term standing, sitting and repetitive motions
    • Typically, at least 60% field work and 40% office work, depending on the week/work
    • Ability to use your senses to see (including close, distant and peripheral vision, depth vision and ability to focus), smell, hear and touch (use your hands to reach, climb or balance, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit)
    • You may be required to drive hundreds of miles per day within the Mid-Atlantic region
    • Some weekend, overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required
    • Ability to regularly lift and/or move/shake up to 40lbs. (soil and/or concrete tests and related apparatus); frequently lift and/or move up to 60lbs. (soil and sand samples, and nuclear density equipment); and occasionally move more than 100lbs. (such as a loaded wheelbarrow of concrete samples)
