The Role

We’re looking for a strategic and hands-on Systems Architect who thrives on ownership. This is not a task-based or prescriptive role — you’ll define direction, drive outcomes, and own the performance of the systems that support Veeva’s core engineering and product support platforms.

You’ll act as a bridge between technical and non-technical teams, combining systems architecture expertise with strong project leadership and communication skills. This is a unique opportunity for someone who wants to stay close to the technology while taking full responsibility for system-level initiatives in a high-impact, individual contributor role.

This role supports our engineering, product support, training, and services teams and will interact with senior stakeholders, including during incident response. You should be comfortable navigating executive conversations, defining priorities, and leading projects from concept through delivery.

Ideal candidates have worked in enterprise software or at a high-growth tech company and bring a strong foundation in AWS-hosted applications, system design, and performance troubleshooting.

What You’ll Do

    • Lead the architecture and ongoing performance of our internal platforms (GitLab, Jira, Confluence, TestRail, Mattermost) hosted in AWS
    • Strategically partner with engineering, infrastructure, DevOps, and business stakeholders to understand system usage, pain points, and growth plans
    • Define project scope and lead initiatives from start to finish - including planning, stakeholder alignment, technical design, implementation, and communication
    • Own performance, scalability, and reliability outcomes - proactively uncovering issues and designing sustainable solutions
    • Monitor and improve system health using observability tools, performance metrics, and hands-on root cause analysis
    • Communicate effectively across functions and seniority levels - from technical troubleshooting to executive status updates during incidents
    • Stay informed about emerging technologies, including AI, to identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement
    • Produce and maintain documentation around architecture, roadmaps, and technical decisions
    • Be a driver, not a follower - take initiative, make the system better every day, and seek out improvements without being asked

Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience
    • 8+ years of experience in systems architecture, site reliability engineering, or application infrastructure roles
    • Proven experience owning cloud-hosted systems at scale, ideally within AWS
    • Demonstrated success in leading complex technical projects involving multiple teams or stakeholders
    • Experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, and observability/monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus, Elasticsearch, Grafana)
    • Strong troubleshooting skills, with a natural curiosity and a drive to diagnose and resolve complex issues
    • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly with non-technical audiences, including executives
    • Comfortable making decisions in ambiguous situations and prioritizing work in fast-paced environments
    • Excellent organization and time management skills; able to balance project timelines with hands-on responsibilities

Nice to Have

    • Background as a software developer or DevOps engineer
    • Experience implementing or maintaining GitLab, Jira Data Center, or similar platforms
    • Familiarity with scripting (Python, Bash, Go, etc.)
    • Exposure to enterprise software environments (5,000+ employees or similar scale)
    • Prior experience acting as a technical lead or systems owner

Perks & Benefits

    • Medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance
    • Flexible PTO and company paid holidays
    • Retirement programs
    • 1% charitable giving program

Compensation

    • Base pay: $115,000 - $165,000
    • The salary range listed here has been provided to comply with local regulations and represents a potential base salary range for this role. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range above or below, depending on experience and location. We look at compensation for each individual and base our offer on your unique qualifications, experience, and expected contributions. This position may also be eligible for other types of compensation in addition to base salary, such as variable bonus and/or stock bonus.
