Verkor is a French industrial company aiming to pioneer low-carbon battery manufacturing in France. With the backing of prominent industrial companies such as Renault Group, Plastic Omnium and Schneider Electric, Verkor intends to electrify the future of European mobility.

With over 350 experts from 38 different countries, our endeavor is to unite exceptional global talent to bring this ambitious and innovative project to life. Our strong and agile international team continues to grow and adapt to new challenges. Based in Grenoble (France), we have recently started operations our Verkor Innovation Centre (R&D centre and 4.0 pilot line).

We now focus on building the world’s most modern and efficient Gigafactory in Dunkirk (France). With this facility, our ambition is an initial annual production of 16 Gwh of lithium-ion batteries by 2025, thus powering 300,000 electric vehicles annually.

In joining us you will actively participate in this breathtaking industrial adventure to shape the future of European mobility.

Missions :

    • Develop multi-physics mathematical models for Li-ion battery cells coupling mechanical, electrochemical and thermal phenomena in cells with different form factors (pouch, cylindrical, ...)
    • Implement models in COMSOL, Abaqus, 3D Experience and other available tools and run simulations under different load conditions (drive cycles, CCCV cycling, charge protocol, compression force, temperature, …). Assess the impact of mechanical effects (reversible/irreversible swelling, porosity variation, stress-driven diffusion, stress-induced crack formation, fatigue ...) on cell performance, life and safety.
    • Develop and implement mechanical models for battery cells and run simulations to support/assess cell mechanical design (can, welding, …)
    • Develop tools/methodologies and workflow for the systematic electrochemical-mechanical characterization of cells and cell components in collaboration with electrochemical and mechanical modeling engineers.
    • Perform design of experiment (DOE) and run experiments in close collaboration with battery scientists and test engineers, for electrochemical-mechanical characterization of cells and cell components and experimental validation of the model
    • Review literature for state-of-the-art understanding of complex coupling of electrochemical, mechanical and aging phenomena at the particle, electrode and cell levels
    • Work closely with cell development leaders to meet requirements of different projects according to project timelines
    • Lead technical investigations, perform diagnostic analysis and prepare progress updates; participate in creating design review dossier
    • Take initiative for intellectual property development

Prerequisites :

    • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry
    • Strong track record in electrochemical-mechanical modeling of Li-ion batteries (3+ years  preferred)
    • Excellent knowledge of coupled multi-physics phenomena underlying the functioning of Li-ion batteries
    • Strong background in numerical methods including FEM, SPH (familiarity with order reduction is a plus)
    • Proficiency in multi-physics simulation tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics and Abaqus
    • Proficiency in scientific programming tools including Matlab and Python
    • Knowledge in optimization methods and inverse modeling
    • Experience in electrode/cell mechanical and electrochemical characterization methods
    • Experience in cell assemby (glovebox or dry room), battery cyclers and mechanical testing equipment is a strong plus
