Who We Are
Villa is building America’s leading next-generation homebuilding platform. With a mission to be the easiest, fastest and most cost-efficient way to build homes, Villa is a highly scalable new approach to offsite homebuilding and is critical in solving the many problems facing the U.S. housing market. Villa provides end-to-end services for customers that span feasibility, design, permitting, and construction of high-quality homes built using modern offsite construction. Villa is currently the largest ADU builder in California and is growing rapidly into other housing products and geographies.

We are looking for a Technical Lead to join our team.

Why You’ll Love It
You’ll collaborate directly with the VP of Engineering, steer architecture, and turn bleeding-edge AI into concrete wins for construction tech—helping us site, design, and price projects in minutes instead of weeks.

This role is remote, with a preference for candidates based in California, Colorado, and Texas.

What You'll Do:

    • Own the backend: architect, build, and operate our FastAPI services, ensuring reliability, performance, and clear API contracts for internal consumers.
    • Evolve the data model – Design crisp Postgres schemas; lead zero-downtime migrations from Firestore and decide where NoSQL still makes sense.
    • Build internal AI agents – Apply latest Agentic AI frameworks, vector search, and retrieval-augmented generation to automate project estimation, site-layout generation, and parcel scoring.
    • Lead the team – Serve as day-to-day player-coach: own the technical backlog, plan sprints, pair program, and mentor teammates through code reviews.
    • Ship full-stack features – Partner with frontend engineering; provide clean endpoints and, when needed, dive into Next.js for UI tweaks or debugging.
    • Keep analytics trustworthy – Monitor the Fivetran → Postgres → BigQuery pipeline and work to provide corporate dashboards to drive our business forward
    • Continuously improve DX – Automate CI/CD, promote thoughtful testing, and champion observability.
    • Evaluate new tech – Benchmark emerging agent frameworks and infra patterns; adopt when ROI outweighs risk.

What You Have:

    • 7+ years building production backends; 5+ years with API based frameworks.
    • Deep SQL expertise: Postgres tuning, PostGIS spatial queries.
    • Real-world experience migrating live NoSQL data (Firestore, DynamoDB, Mongo) into relational schemas.
    • Hands-on with LLM stacks: OpenAI / Claude / Gemini API - Agentic SDKs (OpenAI, Langchain).
    • Comfortable designing secure, versioned REST/GraphQL APIs and lightweight auth flows.
    • Working knowledge of modern Next.js (App Router, ISR, hooks); able to unblock the frontend quickly.
    • Cloud & DevOps: Docker, GitHub Actions (or similar CI), and one major cloud provider (AWS/GCP/Azure).
    • Proven leadership in a lean/start-up setting—owning architecture while still shipping code.

Bonus Qualifications:

    • Geospatial analytics chops for setback buffers and lot-layout algorithms.
    • Familiarity with IaC (Terraform, Pulumi) and observability stacks (OpenTelemetry, Grafana).
