Summary: Vivid Economics is seeking an Senior Economist (or Engagement Manager) to join our Energy & Industry practice area. This role has management, project delivery and client development responsibilities, alongside providing excellent economic analysis. An ambitious Senior Economist has the opportunity to build their own expertise and clients. We are also interested in hearing from more senior candidates, i.e. at the Engagement Manager level, if applicants feel they have the relevant skills and expertise.

Description of the role
A successful applicant will deliver advanced economic analysis of new and complex problems and communicate recommendations. S/he will also be skilled in project and staff management; able to develop new thematic areas and key clients. Strategic advisory/consultancy experience is essential, either in a corporate environment, government or non-government arena. This is because we are seeking a candidate who can use their expertise to define problems and design solutions, and in some cases that can be delegated to team members for delivery. The candidate will then be responsible for synthesising quantitative and qualitative findings into key messages and developing these with clients.
 
The candidate should be energised by the idea of applying themselves across a range of different challenging problems, and ideally bring some energy expertise. Our coverage is broad, encompassing electricity, gas, carbon pricing, disruptive technologies and system-wide energy transitions. The candidate should have a fascination for trends in the energy sector, where markets are in flux globally due to technological and policy-driven changes. Our pipeline of work covers a range of cutting edge topics such as the modelling of energy transitions, forecasting renewables, battery uptake and global energy demand. A high level of understanding of current trends, and a desire to deepen this knowledge and remain up to date is vital.  
 
The geographic focus is broad, including Europe, and a number of countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, as is the client base, which includes energy multinationals, commodities traders, government departments, development banks and non-governmental organisations.
 
Some international travel is expected.
 
Reporting and supervisory relationships
A Senior Economist is often the primary lead on the analysis. As a result Senior Economist will supervise some staff of Economist and Analyst grade. They will also serve as a development manager for more junior staff members. A Senior Economist will report to an Engagement Manager or Principal. Oversight can be limited and a Senior Economist is expected to take substantial responsibility for delivery of high quality deliverables.
 
If a candidate feels they have sufficient skills and experience, they may apply for a more senior role of Engagement Manager. In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the Engagement Manager is the primary lead on projects, should be developing a client base and will also report to the Directors regarding non-project work, such as client development and operational responsibilities.
 
Experience and qualifications
Candidates must have sufficient experience to demonstrate competency in the duties described. As a guide, three to four years of experience is required to achieve these competencies. Previous consultancy experience is strongly preferred. Previous experience leading analytical tasks is required. A first class or upper second class degree in economics or a closely related field is required. An MSc/MA in a relevant field preferred. Fluency in English is essential.
 
Primary day-to-day duties
·         maintaining and developing relationships with existing clients; as well as a broader professional network;
·         structuring and applying economic frameworks to analytical problems;
·         developing client solutions, addressing client input, and designing materials that effectively communicate recommendations;
·         developing and seeing through plans; forecasting resources; preparing budgets;
·         supporting the development of junior staff through regular feedback and mentorship;
·         keeping up to date with knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organisations;
·         enhancing company reputation by establishing oneself as a recognised authority in the field, and representing the company in external events;
·         participating in firm improvements; potentially leading on internal change initiatives.
 
Compensation range:
      Salary for Senior Economist of £45,000-£57,000 per year, plus annual bonus.

      43 days of paid holiday per year, including UK bank holidays.
