As a Senior Associate, Fund Tax, you will report directly to the Fund Finance Director. You will collaborate with talented colleagues across the company to help manage tax compliance, fund accounting, post-trade operations, reporting, and various projects. You will also collaborate closely with other operations teams and technical teams across the company to support growth projects and scale Voleon's infrastructure. This role is a means to make a difference: together with the Finance team, you will be a core member of running our daily operations and creating infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Ownership of assigned funds and legal entities, ensuring full-cycle U.S. tax compliance from data collection to final return filing, including annual withholding tax calculation and payment for U.S. sourced income paid to foreign investors and investor Schedule K-1 reporting, in coordination with internal teams and external advisors.
- Review federal and state tax returns and investor K-1s for multiple funds; provide oversight and quality assurance across all filings.
- Respond to investor tax inquiries, drafting clear, well-written email responses
- Demonstrate strong communication skills, corresponding directly with banks, investors, Big 4 tax advisors, legal counsel, and colleagues across functions.
- Manage ad-hoc tax-related requests from a wide range of stakeholders with accuracy and timeliness.
- Knowledge of hedge fund–related tax matters, including structuring for foreign corporate blockers, analysis and mitigation of UBTI for tax-exempt investors, assessment of ECI exposure, and PFIC/QEF reporting.
- Partner with fund accounting and fund operations teams on recurring accounting processes
- Conduct monthly ASC 740 assessments to determine applicability and ensure proper accounting for income taxes.
- Review PTET tax withholding calculations for distributions within a tight deadline
Requirements
- 4-6 years of experience in roles in or closely related to hedge fund tax compliance and reporting at hedge funds, tax service provider, or fund administrator
- Demonstrated expertise in partnership taxation (Subchapter K) for hedge fund and its related filings
- Deep understanding of IRC provisions applicable to hedge funds
- Clear ability to explain tax issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including investors.
- Solid experience preparing and reviewing the above forms in practice, including handling PFICs, CFCs, and international reporting.
- Proactive in identifying tax planning opportunities while ensuring compliance.
- Experience with both onshore (U.S.) and offshore (Cayman) fund structures.
- Advanced abilities in Microsoft Excel
- Prior Big 4 or top-tier accounting/tax advisory firm experience in asset management tax (preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, Finance, Accounting, Tax, or a related field
- Authorization to work in the United States
The base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $150,000 in the location(s) of this posting. Individual salaries are determined through a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and geography. Base salary does not include other forms of total compensation such as bonus compensation and other benefits. Our benefits package includes medical, dental and vision coverage, life and AD&D insurance, 20 days of paid time off, 9 sick days, and a 401(k) plan with a company match.
