ABOUT US:
Volta Labs is an applications company that is revolutionizing the future of genomics. We are a Boston based, venture-backed biotech startup that makes extracting vital information from biological samples is as simple as pressing a button, through our flagship product Callisto. Our product speeds up processing time for scientists and increases accessibility to important genetic information for patients. Sitting at the intersection of science and engineering, we invite you to join us on our journey to shape the future of genomics, where insatiable curiosity is encouraged and every Voltarian makes an impact.
THE TEAM:
You'll join a team of innovative thinkers who love to experiment, collaborate, and win together. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of automation, biology, computing, robotics, design, and user experience to benefit our customers and the world.
We are seeking a highly motivated Systems Engineering Manager to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for owning the mechanical and systems design for our instrument, Callisto. A successful candidate will have experience managing large teams, launching and managing post launch product development activities.
Day To Day and Year 1:
- Continuous development of the Callisto sample prep system: this involves owning systems level requirements, architecting and driving systems solutions that spans mechanical engineering and will interface with electrical and software engineering.
- Drive the definition and execution of cross functional projects such as accelerated life cycle testing, development of calibration suite for motion, thermal and electrowetting systems. These developments will inform continuous hardening of the Callisto system, support scaling up of manufacturing and support the field service engineering organization.
- Drive the sustaining engineering efforts such as failure analysis of issues reported by customers in the field. Translate these into learnings to design improvement to harden the existing Callisto system as well as develop requirements for the next-generation platform.
- Manage, develop and build a team of 5+ mechanical and systems engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment
- Act as a key liaison between the engineering team, product management, customer service engineering and product leadership, providing regular updates on project status, strategic initiatives, and potential challenges.
Within 3 months you’ll…
Have delivered on execution of a cross functional development effort for the Callisto system with a mechanical engineering focus. This will involve developing a strong relationship with the engineering team and driving the effort from within this group. It will involve tight collaboration with electrical engineering, software engineering and applications / process development.
By 6 months you’ll…
Drive changes to the Callisto system to get them to PVT (design freeze) ready units, deliver on new tools as well as process improvements that impact the customer service engineering team, the manufacturing team and applications development team.
At 12+ months you’ll…
Drive long-term engineering initiatives such as definition of the next-generation system and create a roadmap for future projects and innovation strategies.
Your Experience
- Extensive experience (10+ years) in mechanical engineering, with a proven track record of managing, developing, and leading engineering teams in a senior or management role.
- Demonstrated expertise in mechanical design, product development, and manufacturing processes, with a deep understanding of complex engineering systems.
- Strong project management skills, including experience with Agile or other project management methodologies, and the ability to handle multiple high-impact projects simultaneously.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization and external partners.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
