ABOUT US:
Volta Labs is an applications company that is revolutionizing the future of genomics. We are a Boston based, venture-backed biotech startup that makes extracting vital information from biological samples is as simple as pressing a button, through our flagship product Callisto. Our product speeds up processing time for scientists and increases accessibility to important genetic information for patients. Sitting at the intersection of science and engineering, we invite you to join us on our journey to shape the future of genomics, where insatiable curiosity is encouraged and every Voltarian makes an impact.
THE TEAM:
You'll join a team of innovative thinkers who love to experiment, collaborate, and win together. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of automation, biology, computing, robotics, design, and user experience to benefit our customers and the world.
The Senior Firmware Engineer will report into the CEO/Founder, joining an early-stage Engineering team as we tackle a full rewrite of our MVP firmware into a permanent Rust architecture.
This is the perfect role for an experienced firmware engineer who wants to utilize new technology to support a groundbreaking product. You’ll have autonomy in your day, a close-knit team of curious and collaborative scientists, and lots of areas to dig in and expand your own knowledge.
Day To Day and Year 1:
- Supporting the refactoring: getting hands on with the MVP architecture, and rewriting peripheral drivers at the register level
- Contributing to team culture and hiring growth through collaborative knowledge-sharing, a curious and open mindset, team referrals, and interview support
- Expand your skills with Rust and firmware expertise on a product that will continue to grow in complexity as we scale
Within 3 months you’ll… have completed onboarding, ramped into our code base, and fully understand our product and market opportunity. You’ll be owning your work independently with little oversight, supporting the MVP firmware refactor into Rust.
By 6 months you’ll… be sharing opinions and opportunities with the broader engineering and biology team, actively adding to team culture and supporting hiring if needed. Work will expand into more critical areas of the firmware, including protocols, drivers, and realtime task structure for Callisto (our Instrument).
At 12+ months you’ll… have completed the refactor of protocols, realtime task structure, and drivers
Your Experience:
Volta sits at the crossroads of biology, robotics, and engineering. To be successful in this role, you should have accomplished the below and be confident in owning each area on our team:
- Autonomous unsupervised ownership of writing peripheral drivers at the register levelKnowledge of Rust, C/C++, or a consistent ability to self-teach new technologies and languages to achieve
- Production-ready proficiencyAwareness or interest of how open-source software can be leveraged in your field, and an ability to experiment and iterate quickly to find best outcomes
- Comfort and experience with a small-team startup environment; you get a seat at the table to help make decisions, and sometimes have to work with ambiguity or help things out.
