Washburn Center for Children is a leading children’s mental health center, caring for a wide variety of children’s needs associated with anxiety, depression, behavioral difficulties and trauma.
 
The 141-year-old nonprofit offers critical mental health intervention to help children - and their families - realize hope. Washburn Center for Children serves almost 4,000 children ages 0-18 and approximately 9,000 family members each year. Washburn Center’s three office locations – Brooklyn Park, Edina, and Minneapolis – serve the entire Twin Cities metro area. The nonprofit also offers in-home services, and its school-based program serves 50+ schools in the Eden Prairie, Bloomington, Minneapolis, Savage, Burnsville and Eagan school districts.

The Director, Equity and Inclusion will work closely with the staff, agency leaders, and the Board of Trustees to develop and implement an equity, diversity, and inclusion plan to support the agency’s strategic priorities. This role will build, strengthen and further define the diversity, equity and inclusion strategy across our organization. It will oversee the design, development and implementation of DEI strategies, programs, policies, and metrics. They will act as a collaborative partner and trusted advisor to staff, agency leadership, and the Board of Trustees to ensure EDI considerations are incorporated in the decision-making processes.  The Director, Equity & Inclusion will have a passion for equity, diversity, and inclusion, solid experience working on a variety of EDI initiatives, understanding of EDI best practices, excellent client partnership capability, executive communication skills, analytical skills, and demonstrated ability to collaborate cross functionally and drive strategy in a fast-paced environment. They are strategic and inventive, as well as outstanding at tactical implementation and operational excellence.
 
The Director EDI’s principal responsibilities include: developing clear EDI vision and plan for the agency; partnering with staff to embed EDI into all aspects of the agency;  assessing and evaluating the impact of current and future EDI efforts;  working to develop an equitable, diverse, and inclusion-oriented culture across the agency; serving as an ambassador in the community for EDI;  administration of the Pathways fellowship program (in partnership with HR and clinical leadership);  design and facilitation of the Foundations In Seeing Complexity learning experience;  management of the agency’s EDI ecosystem; and championing awareness, understanding, allyship, and advocacy for anti-racism, social justice, and the advancement of underrepresented groups. 
 
The Director, EI must be committed to and understand how to promote the value that EDI brings to Washburn Center for Children and the work it does on behalf of children and families.  The Director, EI reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Strategy and Planning

    • Maintain a deep understanding of the agency’s mission and vision to develop the EDI vision, strategic plans, goals and metrics in support of Washburn Center for Children's strategic plan and individual program and departmental initiatives.
    • Recommend, develop, implement and support organizational initiatives, objectives and strategies related to the advancement of equity and inclusion.
    • Evaluate policies and practices and leverage expertise to recommend changes to enhance equity and inclusion across the organization.
    • Partner with Training Institute to further develop and provide EDI learning experiences for clinical and administrative staff.   Design, develop and deliver learning experiences that will enable WCC to create a more diverse, inclusive and equitable environment.
    • Partner with Finance to support the execution, management and maintenance of strategically aligned Supplier Diversity Programs.
    • Work with Development Department to identify grant opportunities that support Washburn Center’s Diversity & Inclusion initiatives.
    • Conduct individual and group Intercultural Development Inventory debriefs, action planning, and coaching.
    • Act as “Keeper of the Story” by managing diversity and inclusion documents, trainings and communications and documenting future initiatives and outcomes. Audit and archive historical diversity information including minutes, trainings and communications to ensure we maintain the history of diversity and inclusion at Washburn Center.
    • Support the CEO in providing primary staff support to the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee and in making presentations to the Board of Trustees.

Advocacy

    • Develop and maintain key relationships with individuals, organizations and others, both internally and externally that impact the overall organization and relate to equity and inclusion.
    • Establish and build productive and healthy working relationships across the organization to help coach colleagues in understanding and responding to EDI related topics and issues.
    • Oversee and support the Employee Resource Groups and EDI Committees by providing coordinated tools, resources, guidance and thought leadership.
    • Serve as the ombudsperson when conflicts arise among employees around matters of equity and inclusion and facilitate reconciliation following conflict;

Thought Leadership

    • Benchmark with external organizations on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) data, structure, priorities, initiatives, etc.
    • Develop industry knowledge to understand how best practices can be applied effectively within our agency.
    • Provide strategic advice and counsel to agency leadership on EDI-related topics.
    • Develop metrics and track results to measure progress and impact of EDI initiatives.

Talent Management

    • Partner with Human Resources on talent management strategies for attracting, developing, and retaining high-potential and qualified diverse talent for jobs at all levels within the organization.
    • Partner with HR to develop contacts with and seek referrals from various diverse professional organizations to fill key positions. Consults with recruiters (internal and external) to ensure that the selection of employees is in support of the organization's EDI goals. Develops candidate sourcing tactics such as job fairs, historically or culturally minority institutions, and other strategic alliances for networking and recruitment opportunities.
    • Support relationships with, and recruitment of students from diverse backgrounds through relationships with area universities, colleges and professional schools.  Provide support and guidance in creating communications to attract diverse candidates.
    • Partner with HR and clinical leadership to administer the Pathways Fellowship Program.

Community Engagement

    • Passionately represent the organization internally and externally on DEI related efforts as appropriate. Develops and recommends strategies for working with external community and cultural organizations.
    • Partner with Training Institute, clinical leadership, HR, and marketing to foster community partnerships that align with our commitment to EDI and provide opportunities to enhance awareness and learning for teams.

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

    • Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience
    • Intercultural Development Inventory Qualified Administrator certification or commitment to being certified is required
    • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
    • Intermediate knowledge of Teams and Excel
    • Intermediate project management knowledge
    • Advanced change management knowledge
    • Intercultural competence
    • Ability to translate quantitative and qualitative data into action/recommendation
    • Thorough understanding of federal, state, and local equal employment opportunity/human rights laws and regulations.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience designing, developing, and leading the execution of measurable and scalable EDI programs and initiatives or other comparable programs and initiatives
    • Experience with and commitment to equity and inclusion
    • An understanding of the concepts of equity, systemic racism, institutional racism, and systemic bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
    • Strong understanding of talent practices and experience partnering with HR to drive EDI results, specifically in diversity recruiting, diverse talent management, advancement and retention programs
    • Experience and credibility in collaborating with and influencing staff, senior leadership teams, and board to galvanizes others into action around building more diverse, equitable and inclusive environments.
    • Experience in the creation, facilitation and presentation of intercultural training programs.
    • Previous experience working or living with culturally diverse populations.
    • Experience leading and operating in a matrixed environment, ability to lead through collaboration and influence rather than formal authority.
    • Analytical skills, with ability to use data (qualitative and quantitative) and metrics to evaluate needs, drive change and measure impact.
$115,000 - $125,000 a year
Salary Range $115,000 - 125,000 Depending on education and experience

Vacation:  Paid Vacation accrues at 10 hours of vacation per month - up to 15 days / 120 hours annually.
Sick Leave:  Paid sick leave accrues at 6.68 hours of sick per month - up to 10 days / 80 hours.
Holidays:  There are 2.5 days/20 hours of floating holidays per year in addition to the eight standard holidays.
