Welocalize is looking for Linguistic Quality Specialists with outstanding writing skills and creative minds to participate in a project that will help shape the future of chatbot technology in many languages. Imagine first that you have some problem that you want to solve (maybe with your insurance, or with a retailer, or with an airline, etc). You call the company’s customer support telephone line to get help and a computer chatbot answers. Here is where our team's work on this project would begin.
A team of creators will be sourced to develop a set of potential examples of things someone might say in your language and culture when you speak on the phone. We call these statements “utterances”. You will be the language and culture expert who will evaluate and edit these sentences to make them perfect. You will have to fully understand AND be able to apply the special rules for how these sentences must be written. Sometimes you will just fix the creators' mistakes. Sometimes you will provide feedback to creators to help them improve.
At the start of the project, you must be able to quickly learn the requirements for the project in general and for your language specifically and assist in orienting creators by providing detailed feedback on their work and ensuring that they understand and can meticulously implement the guidelines.
Requirements: Successful Linguistic Quality Specialists have amazing attention to linguistic detail, are able to think like a playwright, have 20 ways to say the exact same things, and can perform smart copy-editing with speed and accuracy.
Native-level fluency in target language (written and spoken) and a strong understanding of the formal rules of grammar and spelling. Plus a strong handle on formally correct usage of the writing system.
Preferred candidates will also be familiar with the way the target language is used by a wide range of speakers from ages 15-70, primarily from urban and sub-urban settings.
Advanced English comprehension (spoken and written); able to understanding training materials, instructions and creative writing prompts written in English.
Ability to follow nuanced linguistic instructions (e.g. Do not use numerals in your writing. Write out all numbers. Do not use “1”. Do use “one”. Only use periods in some types of abbreviations, not in others.)
Ability to communicate questions quickly and succinctly in English.
Ability to hit demanding deadlines by learning how to work in efficient ways.
Rich vocabulary, knowledge of local-market conditions, knowledge of local-market slang.
Extensive knowledge in local-market insurance, financial and health care systems (work experience in these sectors is not necessary, but knowledge as a consumer of these systems is critical).
Ability to effectively work in Excel and use other online tools for communication, issue tracking, etc. (Experience with Jira bug tracking a plus).
Efficient online research skills.
Availability for ongoing task assignments from October 2020 through March 2021.
Preferred: Documented work experience as a linguist, translator or writer (journalism, creative writing, preferred).
Duration: 18-19 weeks
Start Date: ASAP
Pay Rate: USD 20.00 per hour
Working Hours/Schedule: Quality Specialists will receive project orientation & training in the October - November timeframe. Orientation will include completion of some online modules, some video conference calls, and doing some sample tasks with direct personalized feedback. Production work will begin late November, early December and will proceed every week until the end of February 2021, possibly into March 2021. Quality Specialists will have opportunities to accept tasks that take approximately 10-25 hours per week, with some opportunity for additional tasks/hours for high performers. Most tasks will have a fixed amount of time for completion and Quality Specialists will be required to achieve the expected throughputs.
