Nex3 is seeking a Managing Director to drive capital sourcing, deal sourcing, vetting, portfolio construction, deal execution, and value add of our investments alongside our team at Nex Cubed for our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fund. The Managing Director is expected to bring thought leadership, collaboration, and exceptional execution. We are looking for a candidate that has an extensive venture capital background in pre-seed and/or seed and helped create and or scale a venture capital fund or funds applicable to our thesis. Previous experience in working inside of an accelerator with a focus on diversity and inclusion is also highly desirable.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead the team relative to capital sourcing (fundraising) with new and existing partners.
- Deal flow origination for our fund products (specifically for our HBCU Fund)
- A deep knowledge of how to select and organize accelerator classes with a focus on diversity and inclusion
- Manage and assist in diligence processes and investment execution
- Review and screen entrepreneurs’ pitch decks and assist other Managing Directors and the investment team
- Work with HBCUs nationally to help source founders
- Support portfolio companies on various value creation opportunities
- Interact with entrepreneurs, advisors, LP’s and other investors across the broader environment
- Join boards and provide governance and value add process
- Collaborate and be abundant with members of the team
- Define clear macro & micro strategies specific to diversity and inclusion around deal sourcing and advocate and execute against that plan
- Develop their own capital sourcing (fundraising) and deal flow ecosystem while assisting others whenever possible
- Assist the other executives in all deal sourcing activities including investor meetings, introductions, documentation and presentation assistance
- Develop and deliver thought leadership (as regards deal sourcing and strategy) to the broader team, Partners, Advisors & LP’s
- Help with identifying areas of inefficiency within the firm and suggest improvements (e.g. systems, capital & deal sourcing channels, recruitment, etc.)
- Be purposeful and represent the firm well relative to mission-related organizations, nonprofits, and NGO’s via volunteering in local community activities
- An understanding and or having created or driven work processes associated with the UN’s 17 Sustainability Goals
Qualifications
- 3-10 years work experience at a venture capital or technology firm
- Skilled at understanding and working with founders and LPs
- Strong fundraising and business development track record
- Strong, attributable deal sourcing track record within venture, either at an established venture capital firm, accelerator or as an entrepreneur
- Deep knowledge of the diversity and inclusion ecosystem, the attributable technologies, especially startups, including software, products, trends, investors, and the broader environment
- An ability to add value to a startups
- Well-developed ecosystem of established relationships with other venture investors, entrepreneurs, Universities, Incubators and Tech Centers
- Some exposure to Fin Tech, Digital Health, Prop Tech, and/or Ed Tech
Personal Characteristics
- Technical background: A bachelor’s degree in Business and or Science degree in Computer Science and or a Masters in a similar field
- Energetic, rising star, executive presence with professionalism. Someone who builds trust and respect with the firm’s investing team, LPs, office staff, and outside service providers. A highly skilled communicator, who is equally comfortable addressing the GPs, internal staff, and LPs
- An ability to listen, understand, and communicate effectively in a wide variety of contexts and with a wide variety of people
- Assertive, straightforward, strategic thinker, tireless
- Comfortable operating in a partnership environment
