Woven by Toyota is enabling Toyota’s once-in-a-century transformation into a mobility company. Inspired by a legacy of innovating for the benefit of others, our mission is to challenge the current state of mobility through human-centric innovation — expanding what “mobility” means and how it serves society.

Our work centers on four pillars: AD/ADAS, our autonomous driving and advanced driver assist technologies; Arene, our software development platform for software-defined vehicles; Woven City, a test course for mobility; and Cloud & AI, the digital infrastructure powering our collaborative foundation. Business-critical functions empower these teams to execute, and together, we’re working toward one bold goal: a world with zero accidents and enhanced well-being for all.

TEAM
The Woven by Toyota (WbT) AD/ADAS organization is developing the core algorithms for safe and robust driving of complex and uncertain real-world environments. Our teams are contributing to next generation autonomy and AD/ADAS active safety systems through core algorithms, data-driven approaches, and efficient architectures.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR?
We are seeking a passionate Vehicle Test Engineer (VTE) with experience in AD/ADAS including hands-on experience in structured vehicle testing and validation.  The ideal candidate will work closely with WbT’s Vehicle Operations personnel on testing of prototype AD/ADAS vehicles, including vehicle instrumentation, on-road and closed-course testing, and data collection. This role also involves supporting real-time troubleshooting, monitoring vehicle behavior during automated driving testing, and providing technical feedback to global  engineering teams, including our partners in Japan.

In addition, you will collaborate with Systems Engineering and Simulation teams to define verification strategies, develop structured testing methodologies, and design test infrastructure, including test rigs to support end-to-end validation. This role also involves working with Program Managers to develop and execute effective test and demonstration plans and coordinating with critical partners, such as test track personnel and equipment suppliers.

The position reports to the WbT VTE Engineering Manager and requires some domestic overnight travel (<10%), with significant local travel to regional test tracks. This role is based in Ann Arbor, MI with a requirement to work in the office at least three days a week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Collaborate with Systems Engineering and Simulation teams to develop structured testing procedures and execute full vehicle AD/ADAS tests.
    • Define testing objectives and develop efficient work plans, supporting the engineering team with in-depth analysis of technical issues, failure investigation, performance verification, and system integration.
    • Build expertise in WbT’s vehicle testing needs, methods, and equipment, and stay updated on the latest testing technologies to enhance testing capabilities.
    • Contribute to the design and operationalization of WbT test tracks, including layout development and configuration of simulated driving environments.
    • Support algorithm development by providing test plans, managing execution, documenting issues, analyzing results, and producing detailed reports within Scrum-based sprints.
    • Perform both subjective and objective vehicle tests based on driving and evaluation skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required.
    • At least 5 years of test engineering experience with robotic or electromechanical systems, including expertise in ADS operations and vehicle dynamics testing.
    • Skilled in using advanced electronic test equipment, especially vehicle “soft targets” and mobility platforms for closed course test scenarios.
    • Experience in developing DVP&R, test procedures, and data analysis.
    • Strong attention to detail, safety-first attitude, and effective communication skills.
    • Ability to influence teams and work cross-functionally.
    • Basic proficiency in Python for writing simple scripts.
    • Comfortable in fast-paced, evolving settings and proficient with tools like Google Suite, Jira, Jama, Confluence, Slack, and CAD.

NICE TO HAVES

    • High-performance driver training or relevant experience and certification.
