TEAM
The Technologies & Standards team is a small team that is responsible for advanced technologies, open source software, standards, and information sharing across Toyota Group and the broader industry. It acts as a conduit to enrich Woven by Toyota's technology culture, with the objective of supporting Toyota's transformation into a software-first mobility company.

You will report to the Head of the Technologies & Standards team. This role's workplace is in our Nihonbashi office in Japan.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a technical expert for modern software development and associated standards. The candidate understands systems software development, and how such development relates to standards. Standards work includes international standards, internal standards, tooling automation for standards, and compliance. Of particular importance is the ability to manage standards as used in large codebases with many users, and the code's careful co-evolution with standards over many years of continued improvement. This role targets safety-critical systems, but experience in this environment is not a prerequisite.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Involvement in the broader technology ecosystem, particularly for safety-critical and system software, to understand and influence the ongoing evolution of these fields;
    • Work with internal teams developing the vehicle software platforms, and users of this vehicle software, to identify areas where significant improvement can be achieved through improvement of standards and associated tooling;
    • Prototype new standards (internal and external), their adoption, automation, and measure improvements;
    • Work with internal teams to adopt these standards;
    • Promote the creation of an inclusive and emotionally-safe world class engineering culture.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Fluency in English;
    • Excellent customer and partners management skills;
    • 3 years of experience with modern low-level software development, such as Rust;
    • Experience using modern software development standards;
    • Attention to details when it comes to software and standards, with clear and precise writing skills;
    • Experience working in multicultural teams and openness to multiple cultures;
    • Excellent knowledge of modern software development practices;
    • Experienced engineering practitioner in a commercial products context;
    • Mindset for ownership, growth, and a bias for progress;
    • Deep commitment to quality.

NICE TO HAVES:

    • Proficiency Japanese;
    • Contribute to open source projects;
    • Contribution to international standards;
    • Presentations at international conferences;
    • Automotive Industry or other safety-critical engineering;
    • Security-conscious software design and implementation.
    • Publications in academic research;
    • Video Games, Simulation, or High Performance Computing.
