About Woven by Toyota
Woven by Toyota is enabling Toyota’s once-in-a-century transformation into a mobility company. Inspired by a legacy of innovating for the benefit of others, our mission is to challenge the current state of mobility through human-centric innovation — expanding what “mobility” means and how it serves society.

Our work centers on four pillars: AD/ADAS, our autonomous driving and advanced driver assist technologies; Arene, our software development platform for software-defined vehicles; Woven City, a test course for mobility; and Cloud & AI, the digital infrastructure powering our collaborative foundation. Business-critical functions empower these teams to execute, and together, we’re working toward one bold goal: a world with zero accidents and enhanced well-being for all.

TEAM
Toyota is redefining what it means to move. We're challenging the current state of mobility by enhancing the movement of people, goods, information and energy. Centered around three core concepts - A Living Laboratory™, Human-Centered, and Ever Evolving City™ - Woven City serves as a test course for mobility to fulfill our purpose of well-being for all.

We do this by bringing together a diverse community of people with a shared passion for the future of mobility to co-create, develop and refine innovative products and services. This cross-section of social infrastructure, mobility, and people provides a unique opportunity for inventors, residents and visitors to interact seamlessly with new technologies throughout daily life in an environment that emulates a real city.

The robotics team develops tools and services to support inventors operating in the Woven City. To do that, we act as inventors and strive to create innovative robotic applications utilizing the latest technologies from the robotics literature to solve real world problems. Our inventions need not be polished products, but they should be exciting and ambitious so as to inspire other inventors and to spark new collaborations between them. We take care to package the tools and technologies that we develop for our inventions and we offer these to other inventors to accelerate their development. We’re a democratic and open-minded team and we value engineers with an ambitious vision for the future of robotics - as well as the technical skills to make it a reality.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Vision Language Models (VLMs) and Vision Language Action Models (VLAs) are becoming increasingly powerful tools in robotics; allowing robots to perform tasks that were previously considered extremely challenging. We are looking for talented engineers who have a strong interest in applying these tools to robots that operate in daily living environments. At the same time, there are lots of technical challenges involved in introducing robots to living environments. As such, we are seeking engineers who have both a long-term ambitious vision as well as a practical problem-solving mindset.

RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Actively maintain an understanding of the latest developments in the machine learning literature, especially as it relates to robot learning
    • Integrate state of the art machine learning algorithms into the projects being developed within the robotics team
    • Carry out fundamental research in the field of robot learning in order to develop our tools beyond the state of the art
    • Collaborate with Woven colleagues, members of Toyota Research Institute (TRI), and related companies, such that the impact of the research is maximized as a global team

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • M.S. degree in machine learning, computer vision, robotics or computer science, related field or equivalent practical experience
    • 3+ years of professional experience working on a machine learning project, in Python using a machine learning framework (preferably PyTorch)
    • Software development experience in a team, preferably in C++  or Python, following coding rules, participating in code reviews, and using CI systems and repository management tools
    • Deep understanding of Reinforcement Learning or Imitation Learning
    • Experience validating machine learning algorithms on actual robots, and awareness of the difficulty of real-world systems
    • Strong communication skills, in both verbal and written English

NICE TO HAVES

    • Ph.D in Robotics, Computer Science or related fields
    • Publications at top-tier conferences in relevant fields
    • Experience deploying, training or fine tuning Vision Language Models or Vision Language Action Models
    • Experience developing technologies that target unstructured environments
    • Experience contributing to open source projects
