TEAM
The Technologies & Standards team is a small team that is responsible for advanced technologies, open source software, standards, and information sharing across Toyota Group and the broader industry. It acts as a conduit to enrich Woven by Toyota's technology culture, with the objective of supporting Toyota's transformation into a software-first mobility company.
You will report to the Head of the Technologies & Standards team and the role is onsite at our Tokyo office.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for an experienced manager, leading a small and highly-capable team of experts in modern software development and standardization. The team has a variety of technical experts who are geographically distributed, and who have a proven track record of creating new technologies which are deployed at scale, with a handful of promising junior developers. As manager of the team, you will guide and grow the team, and work with engineers to meet the needs of the customers. This role targets safety-critical systems, but experience in this environment is not a prerequisite.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Lead a team of software engineers and standardization experts, providing mentorship, guidance, and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence within the team.
    • Support software engineers in the definition and implementation of new technologies.
    • Support standardization experts in the definition, implementation, and deployment of new standards, and in the evolution of existing standards, both internal and external to Woven by Toyota. As an experienced software engineer, actively participate in the most critical and/or challenging technical designs.
    • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product management, and quality assurance, to ensure cohesive and effective design and implementation.
    • Drive decisions for complex software systems, considering scalability, performance, security, and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and prioritize technical requirements, ensuring they are effectively translated into software or standards.
    • Participate in hiring and up-skilling a team of technical experts.
    • Promote the creation of an inclusive and emotionally-safe world class engineering culture.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Fluency in English.
    • 5+ years of experience with C++
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
    • 10 years of proven experience in software engineering roles, preferably in a safety critical industry.
    • 3 years of experience leading teams.
    • Ability to balance strategic thinking with a hands-on approach, ensuring successful execution of engineering plans.
    • Familiarity with relevant programming languages, frameworks, and technologies used in Automotive or other safety critical software development.

NICE TO HAVES:

    • Strong knowledge of automotive software development, including industry standards, safety, and security requirements.
    • Experience in standards bodies such as ISO.
    • Open source software contribution experience.
    • Publications in academic research.
    • Represent the company in technical discussions, conferences, and industry events.
    • Japanese communication skills.
