Full-Time /
On-site
Xcimer Energy leverages decades of research on Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) combined with groundbreaking new laser architecture. Our mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. Xcimer has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by leading investors, Xcimer is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. Join us in powering a better world with inertial fusion!

As an Electrical Engineer in our Pulsed Power group, you will be responsible for the electrical design of large and small high voltage systems/subsystems and control, hardware procurement support, overseeing of assembly, testing, and operation of high voltage systems/subsystems that support pulsed power for powering rare-gas/halide (excimer) lasers; initially for Xcimer prototype systems, and continuing through the design and demonstration of a power-producing IFE reactor. We are looking for our engineers to apply their technical expertise, problem solving skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact the future of energy!

Responsibilities

    • Perform electrical and magnetic field analysis for pulsed power and high voltage circuit elements and systems, using 2D and 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis (EM FEA) software, such as QuickField,  Dassault CST Suite, or other, for static as well as transient responses.
    • Perform circuit simulations of transient circuits using lumped element codes such as SPICE and its derivatives and CASTLE (NRL), as well as some transmission line analysis using codes such as BERTHA (NRL) and SCREAMER (SNLA), as necessary
    • Communicate and interact with mechanical, laser and optical engineering members of the design team
    • Follow the design of the kJ-scale (optical) Phoenix laser system and subsystems through Preliminary and Final Designs
    • Support procurement of Phoenix hardware
    • Oversee and assist assembly by a team of interdisciplinary technicians
    • Support shake-down and testing of pulsed power system(s) for Phoenix
    • Support operation of the pulsed power equipment for laser development/iteration
    • Support and perform data acquisition and analysis
    • Continue above roles and responsibilities to participate in subsequent amplifier up-scaling leading to that which is needed for a power-producing IFE reactor
    • Participate in concept studies supporting the use of these lasers in a power-producing IFE reactor, and other applications

Qualifications

    • PhD or MS in Pulsed Power, Electrical Engineering or Electronic Engineering/Technology
    • 1+ years of industry experience working on pulsed power systems
    • A willingness to learn from senior technical staff (40+ years experience)
    • Interdisciplinary experience a plus
    • Experience with computer simulation as an analysis and design tool
    • Knowledge of transmission line theory as applied to transient circuits
    • Must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer

$100,000 - $160,000 a year
Candidates may be considered for other positions at Xcimer Energy, and our actual base salary will be determined on an individual basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience. Xcimer Energy Corporation is a startup pursuing commercial energy production from inertial fusion, using the same fundamental physics recently proven by the NIF (National Ignition Facility) and made economically viable by Xcimer’s novel, low-cost laser architecture. Xcimer was founded in 2021 by a team of experts in high-energy laser systems, nuclear physics and fusion engineering, and has received backing from leading clean energy and deep-tech investors. Xcimer’s comprehensive, integrated design for a power plant has been analyzed and reviewed by independent experts and represents the most assured path to put fusion energy on the grid within 10 years. Xcimer is currently finalizing plans for construction of a prototype, multi-kJ laser facility to demonstrate critical aspects of the Xcimer laser architecture.
Xcimer was recently selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for federal funding under the Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program. Selection was highly competitive and merit driven, with Xcimer receiving the second-largest federal award after Commonwealth Fusion Systems.
