Principal Software Engineer - SLAM

Foster City, CA
Software – Calibration, Localization & Mapping /
Full-time /
Hybrid
Our Calibration, Localization, and Mapping (CLAMS) team is responsible for building the algorithms and tools necessary for keeping Zoox vehicles well calibrated, always knowing where they’re located within the world, and aware of their environment. Without precise calibration, localization, and mapping our vehicles would be at a disadvantage when it comes to perceiving and reasoning about the surrounding world, and is therefore foundational in enabling results from many other teams across Zoox.

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Principal Software Engineer with a robust mathematical background to lead and influence our CLAMS algorithms. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between theoretical mathematics and practical application, ensuring that our teams across different departments, including SDMA, Planner and Controls, are aligned through clear, concise, and rigorous mathematical descriptions of our algorithms.

In this role, you will:

    • Develop robust localization algorithms that perform effectively in dynamic environments with imperfect information.
    • Craft mathematical models and documentation for calibrating the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of our comprehensive sensor suite.
    • Innovate and refine map feature generation processes for our Zoox Road Network (ZRN), leveraging both classical methods and cutting-edge techniques.
    • Drive the analysis and propagation of uncertainties across different layers of the Zoox technology stack.
    • Serve as a mathematical expert within the company, simplifying complex concepts to foster understanding and alignment across various technical teams.
    • Mentor and coach a team of engineers, guiding them to success and leadership in their respective areas.

Qualifications

    • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
    • Extensive publication record in academic journals combined with experience in applying theoretical research to solve real-world problems.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing advanced algorithms for localization, mapping, or related fields in autonomous technologies.
    • Proven track record of leading projects and teams that have delivered innovative solutions.
    • Excellent skills in mathematical modeling, algorithm design, and the ability to convey complex mathematical ideas with clarity and precision.
    • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with experience in mentoring and developing top-tier engineering talent.

Bonus Qualifications

    • Experience with sensor calibration and data fusion techniques.
    • Familiarity with machine learning approaches applicable to autonomous driving technologies.
    • Proven ability to work cross-functionally, aligning multiple teams and technologies towards a common goal.
Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary will range from $254,000 to $451,000.
