Zoox is on an ambitious journey to develop a full-stack autonomous robotaxi and safely deploy a transformative mobility solution for cities. The AV Safety Standards and Process Engineer will actively work on standards, best practices and process development specific to Zoox’s overall Safety Management System. These initiatives will further Zoox’s commitment to continuous improvement of our safety culture, risk management, data assessment, and decision-making processes.


As the AV Safety Standards and Process Engineer, you will define and implement innovative processes that are rigorous, diligent and systematic, as well as applicable and repeatable as Zoox continues to scale, to ensure the highest level of safety in the organization and product. You will continually improve our internal and external processes in support of our Safety Management Systems approach, Safety Research, Safety Review Board, Industry Standards, Anonymous Reporting, and Risk Assessment activities, working closely with our Legal, Policy, Operations, Vehicle Engineering, Safety Design, Software, Hardware and Communications teams to ensure a rigorous, disciplined, risk-based approach.

Responsibilities

    • Facilitate, design, and implement innovative safety and risk management programs and processes for decision-making, including providing systematic process rigor for safety committees and ensuring representation and input from key internal stakeholders. 
    • Develop rigorous standard operating procedures related to safety issues and safety determinations
    • Lead internal and external investigations related to safety trends supported by data and risk-based processes.
    • Create and update Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA) as required for Zoox vehicle systems and subsystems.
    • Ensure that Zoox is well-represented, informed, and influential on active Industry Standards and Best Practice activities and organizations. Support Zoox’s participation on NHTSA rulemaking and UNECE international standards programs
    • Assist with formal reviews of safety programs with executive leadership and present data, findings and areas of improvement
    • Champion strong safety culture at Zoox, and represent Zoox with key external stakeholders and organizations
    • Support the continuing development and implementation of successful operational safety and compliance programs

Qualifications

    • 5+ years of experience in the AV, Automotive, Aviation, Transportation, Defense, Robotics or other safety-focused industries
    • Proven ability to theorize, create, and implement successful safety programs, ideally in the AV or Robotics industry
    • Demonstrated transportation safety knowledge, SMS, risk management/analysis experience, and experience building operational safety programs 
    • Strong influence and communication and technical writing skills with all levels of management, including proven ability to collaborate to achieve multiple simultaneous goals for the organization
    • Familiarity with existing AV safety-related industry standards and best practices 
    • BS in Engineering, Masters preferred; may consider other degrees in a technical or safety related field

Bonus Qualifications

    • PhD/Advanced degree in Engineering, Management or other transportation safety-related field
    • Thought-leadership in AV or other industry standards, or is an actively participating member of professional engineering or safety organizations
    • Experience in creating engineering-oriented standard operating procedures, Failure Mechanism and Effects analysis, risk methodology, and other research areas in industry, academia or government programs
    • Membership or participation in professional societies or industry standards activities
Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $141,000 to $231,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
